A Friendly Dose of Water Coloring

An online chat today centered around water coloring. Water color paper or Whisper White? Blender pens or Aqua Painter? Water color crayons or water color pencils? Ink pads or refills? The discussion got me itchin’ to get to my basement and create a work of water color art.

I headed straight for Morning Cup and just knew I wanted to water color with that set. Instead of the cool tea kettle or single, dainty tea mug, I reached for Take a Sip, the Stampin’ Around Wheel that coordinates with the set. I don’t really use the wheels, so I pealed the rubber off my wheel and mounted it on clear-mount cling foam. I store it in my Morning Cup case so it’s always right in reach, and it mounts perfectly on my clear mount blocks. Here’s my card:

Helpful hints and reminders:

  • Water coloring tips. Stamp on the water color paper with StazOn ink to ensure a permanent image. Tap the moistened Aqua Painter onto the flat end of the crayon to grab the color. I start on one side of each image and drag my color across the image. In this card, I dragged from left to right. This grades the color beautifully. Don’t be afraid to add more color or different colors. The water blends the color beautifully. 20120730-193817.jpg
  • Don’t forget to add texture. The water color paper has a really great texture to it. To add a little texture to the background of this card, I scored two lines on the back of the Baja Breeze card stock using my Simply Scored Scoring Tool. Adds nice dimension to the card.

Stamp sets: Take a Sip, Teeny Tiny Wishes Inks: Early Espresso, Jet Black StazOn Paper: Watercolor Paper, Crumb Cake, Early Espresso, Baja Breeze, Very Vanilla Accessories: Simply Scored Scoring Tool, Simply Scored Stylus, Word Window Punch, AquaPainter, Water color crayons

  1. Aaah! An awesome card! I have a fetish for tea cups, and don’t own this stamp. But! I do agree, Stazon & watercolor paper are the way to go! Your water coloring here is beautiful! Isn’t it so relaxing to water color an image!! You know, they make some great wheels, I must invest in my favorites and mount them like you said, and store them in the case. Many thanks!

    • Thanks, Patti! I agree about how relaxing water coloring can be – funny that the online conversation was about how some people just don’t enjoy it. I appreciate your compliments about my water coloring skills. 🙂

  2. Fantastic watercoloring! Beautiful card!

  3. Brian, I have only been following your blog a short time and I enjoy your creations and reading your tips. I am a hobbyist, so I do not get rid of my retired stamps, although I do keep them separated from my current ones. I thought you had a great idea to keep your unmounted wheels in the case of the matching stamp set. I have just recently unmounted my wheels (I have over 70) and I wanted to let you know that you do not actually have to mount them on the foam to get a good image. I did the first few on foam, then read that they work without it. I tried it, and it is true! Also, since I unmounted all of my old ones, I decided to keep a few of the “naked” wheels to use in case I needed to use one of the unmounted ones as a wheel again. I can just apply temporary adhesive, wrap it on the naked wheel and use it as intended. I was reluctant to unmount them, but I am using them a lot more now as boarders, and it is much easier to get them straight and ink them sufficiently, or even use markers. I did not cut any of the extra length off, so they will easily fit the wheel again if I need to cover a large area on a project.

    • Thanks, Karen. Never even occurred to me that you wouldn’t need the mount foam. Guess it’s time to tear apart another wheel and see for myself. Appreciate the tip!

  4. A sweet sprinkling of color and cups! You have the artist touch for sure! I need to practice for sure – right now my touch is more like a 5 year old with a fat crayon 🙂

  5. Great idea about taking the stamp off the wheel….as I don’t use my wheels as much as I thought I might. Takes too long to ink up and clean up-and also hard to get a straight line-even using an edger. Beautiful card Brian!

  6. I also have a few wheels but have not yet taken them off….I need to pull them out to remember…LOL! Your water coloring is wonderful – I need to practice, a lot!, to get anywhere near you…. Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks….sooooo very much appreciated!

    • So glad to share! Glad you like the tips and tricks – sometimes they are new tips, other times reminders of stuff you already know. 🙂
