A Halloween Treat

When I finished school and moved to Atlanta, I quickly transitioned from an apartment to an in-town condominium. There were no children in our community, so I have never been able to host little ghosts and goblins at my front door. Last November, I moved from the condo into a new home in a lovely neighborhood, so this upcoming October 31 will be the first Halloween that I will need to prepare a bag of treats at my front door. The children in my neighborhood will receive a delightful bag of treats…thanks to the Ghoulish Googlies Bundle.

The Stampin’ Up! Holiday Catalog contains several bundles of products, giving us many great savings. One of my favorites is the Ghoulish Googlies Bundle, which contains 10 small glassine bags with baker’s twine, 20 pre-printed tags, a sheet of googly eyes and an adorable stamp set called Googly Ghouls. Here’s a bag of treats that my goblins will receive, shown along side a cute 3″x3″ I made to coordinate:

While the kit contains some really great pre-printed tags (that I will likely use for my Halloween handouts), I made these tags myself with my paper and punches.

Tips, tricks and reminders:

  • Same design, different layout.  The cute tag on the bag translates perfectly to a card front.  Why reinvent the wheel?  I simply flipped the colors and kept the very same shapes.  I added a background piece to the card for a more complete look.
  • Be aware of the transitions.  I created the tag on the bag first and really like the look of the black scallop on the orange circle when paired with the white bag.  When I tried the same “black on orange” combination on the cardfront, it didn’t work.  Because of the detailed pattern in the DSP on the face of the card, I needed to switch to an “orange on black” combination to cleanly separate the shape from the background print.  The darker circle forced a clear visual separation.

  1. As Ihave said before…..love your tips and detailed comments on how and why of your choices and card making projects… the black scallop detail is an example … I have been making cards for years but two heads are better than one and I look forward to your blog and something simple like the color selection of the scallop can turn a card from ho-hum to wow . Thanks for your time and effort to make your blog special and a “treat” to visit…..

    • Sonny, I can’t tell you how much your comment means to me. As I am creating (and having fun), I try to keep track of the “little things” that I change up or fix so I can share that with others. It’s a whole new perspective. Thanks!

  2. Brian,
I have always loved the glassine bags, always seeing them offered from different vendors – until NOW -they are finally offered by SU! I sooo hope they keep them around! I am sure your neighborhood children will be very happy this Halloween with adorable this treat!! Thanks for the tip on “flipping” colors!!

    • Barb, These bags are really small, but they are PERFECT for a big handful of Halloween treats for trick-or-treaters. I like the texture of them, too. When I first got them, I immediately thought about running them through the Big Shot with an embossing folder, but others beat me to getting that idea out there. Maybe next time…

  3. Be Aware! Ha! I just love a 3×3 note card these two projects are adorable and will look Fang-tastic on your Halloween Party Tray ready to give to your Neighborhood Monsters this October 31st! Congratulations on your New Home!

  4. I’m coming to your house trick or treating this year! Great ideas as usual.

  5. Brian, this set is just darling! I love how you coordinated the bag layers with the card layers. Your tips are very helpful and I thank you! Love your “stuff” ! 🙂

  6. Very cute. Wish I could make them for the kids in our neighborhood. We get about 200-300 kids every year. It is nuts!

  7. Brian, thanks for the great tip! I have been trying to figure out a good way to give my business a boost around the neighborhood. While I don’t typically do halloween handouts, this might be a year for change! Love your ideas and great tips about the reverse color combo!

  8. Very cute projects! TFS
