Feeling Sentimental: PPA155 Sketch Challenge

Welcome to Day 7 of my week long display of the products you should be earning during Sale-a-Bration. Today’s project features Feeling Sentimental (one of my favorite items in the Sale-a-Bration brochure) and a Pals Paper Arts sketch challenge by Margaret Moody.

By now, you know I love a good challenge. Since I have already challenged myself to create Sale-a-Bration projects all week long, I decided to sit back and let this sketch do all the work. Don’t get me wrong – it did take some time to play around with different papers and colors to get the exact balance I wanted – but I stuck to this sketch as it was designed. Here’s my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

• Find your inspiration. The principle inspiration for this card was the combination of the ferris wheel with the ticket page from the World Spectacular Designer Series Paper. I’ve always felt they belonged together but never took the time to marry them. Along with Margaret’s sketch, I had the perfect starting points to build a beautiful card.
• Pick three and stick with it. With a complicated layout, I always think it’s best to pick two or three colors and stick with them. You can change up the patterns or textures, but you can’t have too many colors in a detailed design. Sorry – it’s a rule, and I have to enforce it. I knew I could stamp the ferris wheel in any color I wanted, and the designer series paper I had chosen was already printed with Cherry Cobbler and Early Espresso. That was two of my colors. The third color, Island Indigo, was also featured in this wonderfully faded page from World Spectacular, so I was good to go!
• Balance the colors. Now that you have your colors chosen, it’s important to get that right balance of colors and patterns. That might mean you don’t get to use all the patterned paper you want to use, but them’s the breaks, huh? Because I wanted the tickets paper in the center and the gorgeous Island Indigo paper as the base, I knew the my #2 and #4 pieces (referencing the sketch above) had to be solid colors. Oh, don’t get me wrong. I TRIED to use other patterns from World Spectacular (one of the pages had gorgeous Cherry Cobbler and Calypso Coral stripes), but it was a no-go.
