Christmas Joy

I have several spools of washi tape – Epic Day This & That, Season of Style, Witches’ Brew, Gingham Garden.  Wow!  Do I really have that much?  I’ve been using it for personal cards and notes but haven’t really showcased it too much on my blog.  Until now.  Here’s a card I made that features the Season of Style Washi Tape:  A Banner Christmas, Very Merry Tags, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • A Whimsical Ornament.  When I first saw Mosaic Madness, I envisioned the shapes as Christmas ornaments (see my card here).  I was so happy to see that the Holiday Catalog gave us a beautiful ornament to fit the Mosaic Madness punch with Very Merry Tags.  My ornament hangs off the J in Joy, adding a little movement to the [otherwise] grounded sentiment.  My new group member, Kelly DeTommaso, hung an ornament from a different word in one of her cards recently (see it here), and I just had to follow her lead.
  • Washi Tape Letters.  I cut three squares from the white cardboard backing that accompanies our Designer Series Paper and covered them with strips of Season of Style Washi Tape.  I then ran the cardboard through my Big Shot with the Typeset Alphabet Bigz, cropping the three letters.  I am sharing a similar card on Monday and will have more to say about this then.  Ooooh!  Did I just use my wizard-like marketing skills to convince you to come back on Monday?
  • Properly Placing the Letters.  If you have to center three letters on a panel, logic tells us that the center of the middle letter will be centered on the panel.  Guess what!  Logic doesn’t own you!  The J in JOY is not nearly as wide as the Y in JOY, so the O is not centered on the card.  After I fit the letters exactly where they needed to be to center the word, I removed the J and the O and glued down the Y.  I then glued down the J and O, making sure they line up along the bottom of the letters.Centering letters, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

  1. For one this layout is The Bomb!! A great use of that Washi Tape just taking up space in your Fungeon. I can’t bring myself to use mine, but love the “Christmas wrapping” job you’ve done with it on these letters!

  2. I must say I like the way you used your tape . Cute idea …I like Washi tape …just not so much on my cards . I was glad to read that I am not the only present day card maker that feels that way in Split Coast Stampers forum this week . I have a few rolls that I use on my envelopes more than cards . And there is a neat stamp set in the catty called Tape It that I think is a great way to get the look cheaper . Love the baby ornament ….that may show up on my Christmas swap cards . I have the set and it hasn`t been used much yet …. I like this card !!

  3. Thanks for the shout out Brian! I can’t wait to see your card on Monday.

  4. Great way to use your Washi Tape on this beautiful Christmas card. That little ornament looks like it’s swinging! Great idea to use on this upcoming Christmas swap, I’m very much looking forward to it.

  5. Very fun way to use the Washi Tape! I love the whimsical feel and that ornament is fun! 🙂

Rockin’ & swingin’ Christmas fun Brian!! The way you Washi-taped and placed those 3 letters draws the eye right in!! Brilliant!!! I can hardly wait for Monday, but only because of your forthcoming card!! 🙂

  7. I always get a chuckle out of your posts… And no need for marketing ploys, your blog sells itself! Love the card! Have a great weekend!

  8. Such a fun card, Brian! For washi tape lovers/users, this is a great example of how to use it. For those who don’t have washi tape (for whatever reason), the same effect could be achieved by adhering strips of DSP instead to the cardboard before running it throught the Big Shot. Your dangling ornament adds whimsy. Enjoy your weekend! 🙂

  9. Love this Brian! Great use of washi tape.

  10. Whoa – a show stopper of a card for sure! What color is the green card stock? Is it Gumball Green? Covering the letters with washi tape is nothing short of brilliant for sure. I think the “swinging” ornament off the J really brings the card up a notch. Can’t wait to see what you do for Monday! Super Duper Fantastic card today (as always)!

  11. Love this card, can’t wait for Monday!

  12. A wonderful tip I learned was to use Press-n-Seal and grid paper to line up the letters and then place it on the card 🙂

  13. Your wizard-like skills have already completely mesmerized everyone. We all come back EVERY day to see your wonderful creations and enjoy your blog. This is no exception!

  14. OK Brian, STOP!!!! STOP!!!!! STOP!!!! You are SO creative, I can not keep up with all your cool ideas. Never in a million years would I have thought about doing this. Love it!! Another one to copy.

  17. Love the card Brian and the use of washi tape is great as well. You have inspired me thank you.

  18. You know, Brian, one of the reasons I love your blog is ‘cuz you think to put in little tips for us like how to center the letters. I am the impetuous stamper who plows right thru and glues it down before I have laid it all out, then instead of trashing it and starting all over, I go ahead and send it, even tho my recipients are probably thinking, “She doesn’t care enough to send the very best.” So thank you for helping us be more mindful of these important details!
