Simple Saturday: Love for Freshly Made Sketches

Welcome to Week Three of “Simple Saturday.”  It’s nothing formal, but I’m showcasing quick and easy cards on Saturdays – nothing too complicated, nothing too flashy.  But that doesn’t mean the cards can’t be absolutely adorable, right?  🙂  This week’s uber-simple sketch from Freshly Made Sketches (comprised of a sentiment and five banners) provides the perfect foundation for a quick and easy card.  Here’s my card:

And here’s Amy O’Neill’s incredible sketch that inspired my card:

Tips Tricks and Reminders

  • The Color of Love.  Color selection is extremely important when constructing a card that only has one large sentiment and five small banners.  While I designed this card in the “Valentine’s Day” genre, I didn’t want it to just be red and pink.  I wanted the card to read “fresh” and “flirty,” so a selection of colors from the 2013-2015 In Colors was perfect.  Strawberry Slush, Coastal Cabana and Crisp Cantaloupe are a perfect balance of colors to complete this card.
  • Cropping the Banners.  I used the Hexagon punch to crop the ends on all these banners.  Even though the banners are differing widths, the punch gives a perfect finish to the base.  But here’s the real trick on this card – I made each banner longer than I needed them to be, lined them up along the bottom of the banners and taped them across the top (I then taped the backside of the banners near the banner ends).  I stamped the word LOVE over the banners so I’d have a clear vision of the line I needed to crop so that the banners would fit perfectly under the stamped word.  A super-easy way to get the result I wanted.
  • Options, Options.  Do you see the solid pieces in the word “love”?  There are so many different ways I could have added more to the word “love” to alter this look.  I tried several options but decided to leave it as is – that’s really the best way to complete the look.  I stamped the word on light-colored, pattered paper and snipped out the solid pieces of the word “love” to paper-piece the segments.  I also played around with dragging the Strawberry Sluch ink into the center of the solid pieces with my Blender Pen.  I also considered coloring the pieces in a completely different color.  None of those worked here – you might see them in another project.  Just not today.  🙂

  6. I so love the 2013-2015 In Colors and they work so well on your card. Your decision on leaving your card as is without incorporating some of the other options was the best choice.

  7. Oh Brian – how did you ever think to tape the banners together, then stamp them and snip to get them absolutely perfectly fit under the word Love? That amazed me. That fit is what makes this card so outstanding…….yes, the colors are wonderful, the basic design is wonderful but what you’ve done with it is fantastic.

I am just chomping at the bit to receive the new catalog so I can spend an evening drooling over all the new things available. Then I will have to make that awful decision – buy it now or wait for Sale-A-Bration. Decisions, decisions, decisions!
