A Black Tie Affair with Dynamic Duos

Today’s card features two of the amazing items available during Sale-a-Bration 2014 – Sweet Sorbet Designer Series Paper and You’re Lovely Stamp Set.  It seems like Sale-a-Bration just started, but it’s soon going to be over – make sure you gather up all the freebies you need between now and March 31.  This has been a friendly reminder from your friendly Stampin’ Up! Independent Demonstrator.  You’re welcome.  🙂

Without any further ado, Dynamic Duo has declared this week “Black Tie” week – cards with Black and More Mustard (I used Basic Black and Summer Starfruit).  Here’s my card for this week’s challenge:

Peaceful Petals, Express Yourself, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, DD94 And here’s the challenge banner for this week’s Dynamic Duo color combination: Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Painting the Stamp.  Do you recognize the black border inside the Deco Label Framelit cutout?  It’s from You’re Lovely (if you are reading carefully, you already know that).  While this stamp image comes with a bushel of flowers, I used my Basic Black Stampin’ Write Marker to paint the edges of the border and stamp them down.  QUICK TIP:  If you are editing out a piece of an image by simply painting around it, you need to make sure the stamp is completely clean – the last thing you want to do is huff on the stamp and leave a dirty image behind.  Don’t ask how I figured that one out.
  • Snippy-Doodle-Whee!  I love this little flower from Peaceful Petals.  To add a little dimension, I embossed it twice on Summer Starfruit with Black Stampin’ Emboss Powder.  I snipped one flower out.  Snippy, snippy.  I snipped select petals from the other flower and laid them down over the first one.  A couple of flicks on those select petals bring this flower to life.Peaceful Petals, Express Yourself, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, DD94
  • An Appropriate Pattern.  I have really come to love the earthiness of Summer Starfruit – just as it’s about to end its two-year term as an In Color.  I LOVE the little white specks on this Sweet Sorbet Designer Series Paper.  While they look like modern, little slashes, I think they also resemble rain that pours down over this flower.

Stamp sets:  You’re Lovely, Express Yourself  Papers:  Summer Starfruit, Basic Black, Whisper White, Sweet Sorbet Designer Series Paper  Inks:  Jet Black Stazon  Accessories:  Basic Black Stampin’ Write Marker, Deco Labels Collection Framelits, Black Stampin’ Emboss Powder, Stampin’ Dimensionals

  1. Beautiful, Brian! I love this colour, set off so well by the black.

  2. This card design is a winner.
I could tell how much you enjoyed the creative process.
You seem to notice and appreciated the little things in life like rain on the flowers.
    Thanks for sharing.

  3. I love the Sweet Sorbet DSP as your background (definitely looks like raindrops to me as well)! The single flower is perfect for your layered Deco Label pieces. Such a striking card, Brian! Thank you!

  4. How did you figure out not to huff on a dirty stamp? Lol

  5. Finally I have a use for that specific paper. Summer starfruit isn’t my favorite, but I love what you have done with it. The thin black border is so lovely surrounding the flower. Very pretty.

  6. Love the tip about clean stamps and huffing. So true. Learned the hard way, but thankfully on scrap. I guess the stamp washing pad also has to be cleaned on a regular basis. Love the Summer Starfruit, always was one of my favs. Have a great Sunday. 🙂

  7. Love this color combo. I remember when Summer Starfruit first came out and some demos describing it as “baby poo” but I liked it from the first…especially with paired with black.

  8. Beautiful card! I love the colour combination!

  9. Brian, this card is absolutely wonderful! I love how clean and crisp and striking your cards are. And I LOVE the “Tips, Tricks, and Reminders” section where you talk about the design process that you used. Thanks for sharing!!!

  10. Beautiful!! Took my breath away. It is so pretty and the colors are great. Thanks.

  11. Summer Starfruit turned out to be that surprise color that made other colors pop . I think SU needs to keep it around . Look how smashing this card looks putting these two colors together . Great card …!

  13. Great card Brian! I am new to yoir site and am really enjoying watching your videos and reading your blog. Thanks for sharing.

  14. Magnifique! Summer Starfruit is absolutely one of my favorite colors in the SU lineup. I hope they decide to keep it. I used this particular DSP when making some birthday cards for April because “April showers bring May flowers” and yes, it does look like rain drops. I truly love the way you double stamp, snip and then put it all together to bring the flower to life. You are one creative and talented guy for sure Brian and I’m so happy that I found your blog.

  15. Stunning! I love this color combo!

  16. Beautiful use of this particular dsp. I love the collection, but this particular design has been a challenge for me.

  20. I love this card Brian! I was not a fan of summer star fruit when it first came out but now it’s one of my favorite colors. It pairs nicely with so many colors as evidenced with your card…just beautiful!

  21. Beautiful card Brian! I felt the same way about Summer Starfruit but I actually do use it and I will miss it. Wish I was closer to Atlanta for the live streaming!

  22. I’m not a fan of this color but you made it work really nicely on this card. I really like how that pretty flower looks black embossed against that color and look out!!, the snipping King strikes again!!

  29. I am glad I stumbled across your site today. This is a lovely card and with those colors, even if it does have a flower on it, makes a nice masculine card as well. I am thrilled being married to a guy who is not threatened by a flower on his cards! lol

  30. This card makes me think “April showers bring May flowers.” Sweet! : )

  31. Wow! I love the crisp lines to this card as well as the details that you have added!! Great job and thanks for sharing with us at the Dynamic Duos:-)

  34. This card inspired me so much Brian (especially the “rain” idea with the DSP) that I had to make a card using that concept! I was sure to give you credit for the inspiration, of course: http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/photo/2502575?nocache=1 Thanks for sharing your wonderful ideas!
