Time for a Celebration – PPA196 & PMDS-041

Woo hoo!  It’s time for another Pals Paper Arts Sketch Challenge.  This week’s sketch is super-simple, so the sky’s the limit.  I love a good, simple sketch – it sends my mind in all directions before I settle on a design.  I imagine there will be all sorts of great cards with this sketch, and I can’t wait to see them.  I chose colors that were also inspired by this week’s challenge at The Pixel Maven’s DigiChallenge (I’m submitting my card there, too, even though it doesn’t EXACTLY fit the colors listed and isn’t Digi at all).  Here’s my card:

  • Frilly Design.  I was not initially sure what to do with the In Color Ruffle Stretch Trims that were introduced in the 2013 Annual Catalog, but they quickly made it into my shopping cart.  My original design was just to wrap the trim around the sentiment panel.  Afraid it all looked too bland, I added trim around the larger panel too.  A frilly, frilly delight.  It’s a bit much, I think, but that’s fun every once in a while.Make a Wish, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA196, PMDC-041
  • Patterned Paper.  It’s important to select a Designer Series Paper pattern that complements the rest of the card.  With the large panel, it might be easy to pick a large or small pattern – what you DON’T want is something that’s bold or too colorful.  There are lots of arrows and dots on this patterned paper, but they blend nicely into the background of this card.
  • Cutting Corners.  This ruffle trim is made to wrap and flow.  I can’t imagine success with getting it around hard corners, so I rounded the corners of both panels.  Worked perfectly with a little bit of patience.  I added a piece of cardstock around each panel of paper before adding the trim.  That adds color and sturdiness that’s needed to glue down the trim.

Stamp sets:  Make a Wish  Papers:  Baked Brown Sugar, Coastal Cabana, Very Vanilla, Retro Fresh Designer Series Paper  Inks:  Baked Brown Sugar  Accessories:  3/16″ Corner punch,  3/8″ Ruffle Stretch Trim (Coastal Cabana and Baked Brown Sugar), Stampin’ Dimensionals

  5. Really cute! I could imagine this turning into a great baby shower card too… the ruffles around the large panels remind me of baby quilts or pillow shams. Awesome card!

    Hugs!

  11. This ribbon is very versatile, the fact that it stretches makes it going around the corners an easy task, and it looks really beautiful too. I agree with Naomi, this could be easily turned into a Baby card or even a Wedding card.
Thanks for the tip about rounding the corners and adding the extra layer of CS, it makes perfect sense.

  12. Brian,

  14. I love the ruffle! 🙂

  15. Hi Brian:
This DSP is one of my favorites. It actually reminds me of when we used to play cowboys and indians as children. I don’t know if kids these days are even allowed to do that but, if not, they are missing out on some fun. Until I saw your card it would never have occurred to me to put frilly ribbon with this DSP and yet – whoa la – it works beautifully. You certainly have a creative eye my friend. Great job.

  16. This just says “sassy” to me! I love the ruffles…they’re just right!

  17. Fabulous frills! And the colors are great together – love this!

  18. I love how you used the ruffle stretch ribbon. I haven’t been able to master it. I see it used on cards and it looks great, but I guess I’m just challenged. I can’t make it work for me. Great job, as always!

  19. Love the card and the ribbon really adds to it. Thanks for sharing.
