A Retro Color Challenge for Fab Friday

When I sat down last Sunday to make this week’s FabFriday Design Team card, I had no idea that my project would be chock-full of soon-to-be retired Stampin’ Up! treasures.  With a simple color challenge, I unknowingly created a graveyard of products that I will miss so much.  Here’s my card:

Notable Notions, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FabFri40

And here’s the FabFriday banner for this week’s color inspiration:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • What’s Retiring?  I hear you asking, “Brian, which of these amazingly assembled items is retiring?  Your talent is endless, and your handsome face is a classic beauty.”  Those are your words, not mine.  Here’s a list of all the items I used that are either gone or will soon be gone:  Summer Starfruit cardstock, Birday Basics Designer Series Paper, Fancy Flower punch, Little Leaves Sizzlits, Neutrals Core’dinations Cardstock.  It’s sad to see these go – I have grown to appreciate Summer Starfruit and have grown to love the Core’dinations papers.
  • Where’s the Ink?  I certainly didn’t get “inky fingers” with this card.  There’s not a stitch of ink on it – except for the handwritten note that goes inside.  It wasn’t planned that way, but that’s what happened.  The heat embossed button from Notable Notions is surrounded by gorgeous texture (the ombre pattern in the DSP, the roughness of the Core’dinations, the wispiness of the leaves) that make you almost forget that there’s no ink in sight.
  • White or Vanilla?  I made two buttons with the Early Espresso powder – one on Very Vanilla to pair with the Very Vanilla Birthday Basics paper, and one on Whisper White to pair with the sanded Core’dinations paper.  Back and forth and back and forth.  Which should I use?  I decided that the Whisper White piece popped a bit better and bridged the two panels together best.

Stamp Sets:  Notable Notions  Papers:  Early Espresso, Crisp Cantaloupe, Summer Startfruit, Neutrals Core’dinations Cardstock (Smoky Slate), Whisper White, Birthday Basics Designer Series Paper  Accessories:  Fancy Flower punch, 1-3/8″ Circle punch, 1-1/4″ Circle punch, Early Espresso Stampin’ Emboss Powder, Little Leaves Sizzlits, Neutrals Candy Dots (Early Espresso and Smoky Slate), Stampin’ Dimensionals

Please head over to the Fab Friday blog to check out the posts by our other Design Team members.  They really made some great projects with this wonderful color combination.

Thanks for stopping by today!

  1. Card evokes some nostalgia!
I hear what you are saying about Summer Starfruit, took me quite the time to find it at all endearing. Now the wait to see what replaces it!

  2. Another beauty, Brian. Summer Starfruit has actually become one of my favorites. I love it with the Crisp Cantaloupe. Whisper White is beautiful on this card. Pairs well with the Smoky Slate.

  3. Those Little Leaves ….That was my first Sizzlit ! Then I got obsessed and bought all of them . Summer Starfruit ….what a surprise color . I think more people are sadder to see this color go than any of the others . Well, we will soon be oohing and ahhing over new colors . BTW….this is a strange color combo and you did good !

  4. I want to let Kathi Durgan know I received her swap card ! So cute and I love the Silver Glimmer paper cut with the Star Burst Framelit . How clever you are with card design !!! Thank you ,Brian for sending me that one !

    • Sonny, Woo hoo! Please hold on to that comment and be willing to share it again later. I will start sharing these cards soon (could be tomorrrow…) and I want to make sure the compliments are shared on the posts where the cards are to make sure the artist sees them. Thanks!

      • I was going to do the same as Sonny but I will wait till you post the cards.
Today’s card is really pretty, I love Crisp Cataloupe but I would never have paired with those other colors. This was a really tough color combination but you made it work fabulously.

  5. I certainly wouldn’t have thrown Summer Starfruit in with the other 3 colors but once again you did this challenge proud. It’s just the right amount of Starfruit. No ink? Wow! Now that’s something I’ve never done before. I may have to challenge myself to try it. It’s nice seeing the retiring items in the limelight one more time.

  6. Yes, I too thought these colors were odd together, but you certainly made them work! I like the layout you came up with too. I love when something reminds a reader of their “First” SU item, lots of fun memories. 🙂

  7. I love your minimal use of that crisp cantaloupe, Brian! Can’t believe summer star fruit is going and that insipid peach colour staying! I’ll be glad to see the back of those pastels. Hopefully Stampin Up will bring out more interesting In Colors this year! (I think I am probably in a minority with my views but I find this colour so depressing). Anyway, (down from my soapbox now), I love your card, as usual, and when I case it I’ll be swapping the dreaded CC for a vibrant red!

  8. I love your card, too. For Loz, when your in the North and you have the worst winter ever you love pastels. That’s what keeps you UP

    • That’s a very good point,Vicki, and I apologise for my dislike. I’m from the south east of England and we’ve just had the mildest of winters (you obviously got our share of cold, poor you). I hope that Spring is springing with you, signalling that summer is on its way!

      • Thanks Loz I wish that were true. We are supposed to have rain mixed with snow tonight. I’m sure nice weather will get here eventually. Don’t you just love Brian’s
        cheerful attitude.

  9. Woo Hoo!! I also received my swap cards yesterday and I was going to thank the ladies who made them but I will hold on till you post them Brian, all I will say right now is that they are beautiful!!
Now, on to your card for today…..these colors are kind of a weird combination from the Fab Friday, I don’t think I would have ever put them together in a card but you managed to create something really pretty with them, but then again, you are an artist. Now, Crisp Cantaloupe strikes me more of a color like for a Baby Girl or Bridal shower card, it is indeed very subtle, the Summer Star Fruit it’s more like, well…..for Summer cards. Hmm.., I really never liked it all that much, maybe because yellow is not one of my favorite colors. 🙁

  10. Gosh!! my comment just vanished!! GRR!!
Anyway, I said that I also received my swap cards yesterday and I was going to thank the ladies who made them but I will wait till you post them Brian, so they will know how much I liked them, all I will say is that they are really beautiful.
Now, I would never have put those colors from the Fab Friday together but you, being an artist, managed to create something really pretty with them.
Crisp Cantaloupe is a very, very soft peachy color, it looks great on a Baby or Bridal shower card, the Summer Star Fruit is a weird shade of yellow, I don’t like it all that much, sorry:(

  11. I really fell in love with the Summer Starfruit but the Crisp Cantaloupe never seemed to fit with anything I tried. So, I’m impressed that you did so well with minimal use of it. Just a great card. I kind of stick with the rule of three so the forth color throws me off a bit. LOL That’s a pretty easy thing to do these days.

  12. Well, I would never have thought about this color combination from Fab Friday, this colors don’t seem to go together at all, (at least for me) but as always Brian, you took in the challenge and came out with a great card. I do love the Crisp Cantaloupe shade, it’s so soft and beautiful, (I love the fruit too) and you can make really pretty Baby or Bridal shower cards with it, the Summer Star Fruit is a weird (at least for me) shade of yellow, not one of my favorite SU colors, sorry 🙁

  13. This is another winner. I will really miss Summer Starfruit, I love this color

  14. Well at least it’s a beautiful graveyard Brian! I love how you sanded the Core’dinations down so much…great soft look to let the other colors pop! TFS!

  15. Oh my gosh! You sent me this gorgeous card!!!! I love it even more in person. Thank you Brian for your encouraging message and beautiful card 🙂
