Itty Bitty Baby with Some Itty Bitty Hearts

I love when I have the chance to sit down and play around with new products.  I played around with my Hearts Border punch for several hours before coming up with this fool-proof design.  I’m excited to share this project with you today and love that it paired so well with the Label Bracket punch.  Woo hoo!  Here’s my card:

Itty Bitty Baby, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

This weekend, I’ll be sharing a video I created to walk you step-by-step through the creation of this fun, punched centerpiece.  For now, I want to share some thoughts about the overall design of this card.

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • To Add Color or Not to Add Color.  This card started with the centerpiece with the punched pieces.  The Lullaby Designer Series Paper seemed a perfect fit for this Crisp Cantaloupe treasure.  This piece of paper combines splotches of Crisp Cantaloupe and Hello Honey on Whisper White.  I tried to reincorporate the Hello Honey as a border around the sentiment or outside of the card, but it simply didn’t work – it clashed with the Crisp Cantaloupe.  The splatters look good next to each other, but the solid colors of card stock do not.
  • To Bow or Not to Bow.  My mind’s eye told me that this card calls for a big, luscious bow.  It’s not my “normal,” but I was open to the idea – until I had all the pieces put together.  You see, my mind’s eye doesn’t always see stuff to-scale.  It pictured all this open space that could be filled with a big, puffy bow – open space that simply wasn’t there.  I decided to accent my centerpiece with three strands of Crisp Cantaloupe Thick Baker’s Twine to fill the small space left on the card.
  • To Round or Not to Round.  Again, this card was designed around the center element.  With all its rounded corners, I certainly could have extended the rounded edges to the borders and edges of the card itself – we have choices.  I decided, though, to keep the edges pointed as they make the center piece more special.

  1. What a beautiful card. I love the Thick Baker’s Twine. I wish Stampin’ Up! would bring it out in more colours.

  2. Very nice Brian. Can’t wait for the video. Love the twine around the layers. DSP is so soft and sweet. 🙂

  3. I look forward to seeing the video tomorrow! The centerpiece is very eye catching and clever. Your hard work was worth it. We appreciate you providing the video further explaining how you did this.

    • Now, now, Kelly…let’s not get ahead of ourselves. 🙂 I promised a video this weekend, but it won’t likely be posted until Sunday. 🙂 Just wanted to make that clear because I might not be able to complete the editing tonight.

  4. Oh, I can’t wait for that video either Brian. I’ve looked and looked at this card to try to figure out how you did this fabulous heart border but my brain is kind of still not all here, I might need another cup of coffee to wake it up fully.
I love this card, so beautiful and sweet and you are right, no bow is needed, the beautifully framed sentiment looks fabulous just like that. 🙂

  5. Love polka dots and love hearts and the Label Bracket Punch is on it`s way to my house so this is my card ! I agree on your decision not to put a mama bear bow on this delicate layout. Plus using the twine in the soft cantaloupe was so much prettier. Lastly (is that a word?) Hello Honey as a border would have been too harsh . Love this card with it`s Itty Bitty sweetness ! Looking forward to the video !!!

  6. Love the center piece (can’t wait for the video). I also really like the three strands of baker’s twine across the middle. I think ribbon would have taken away too much from the center focal point. I had not ordered any of the thick baker’s twine yet, as I didn’t think I would use it as much, since I really like the regular baker’s twine. This card convinced me to get some! We DO have choices!

  7. Love what you did with this border punch and bakers twine. Just perfect!

  8. Hello Brian, what a sweet card for a sweet little baby ! Love it ! I’m excited to see your video too, they are very helpful and I learn a lot. You have worked several hours on this card ? Here goes my dream that you can make wonderful perfect cards in 10 minutes ;). Have a nice weekend ! Anita

  9. Maybe we’ll see some pillows on those chairs! 🙂

  10. OMG – that is too stinkin’ cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just made two cards for baby girls born recently. Wish I had seen this first.

  11. Thanks for your tips, tricks and reminders – I really appreciate hearing what goes on behind the scenes when you make your cards. To bow or not to bow, to round or not to round, love it all! Thanks for what you do and how you share it with us! I, too, am looking forward to seeing how you did the hearts. It does look pretty spectacular with the label bracket punch! 🙂

  12. I love the softness this card evokes. It’s perfect for a family welcoming a new baby girl. I can’t wait to see the video, but I will. One question, are you preferring the Memento to Staz-On? Just wondered. Beautiful card Brian

    • Robbye, I used the Memento here – it’s quick, easy and cleans in my Stampin’ Scrub with the rest of my stamps. I like it! If I needed a super-solid image, I might reach for StazOn, but I find myself mostly using Memento as my go-to black ink.

  13. This is adorable, Brian. Thanks for sharing your creativity!

  14. I LOVE the border! Such a cute little card. Can’t wait for the video!

  15. All I can say is AAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEE! So soft, so beautiful, so perfect.

  16. Raquel G.Martinez

Thanks you for always explaining your thought process as you create a card. I learn a lot that way. You’re terrific!

  17. I’m on vacation but I’m keeping up with your great ideas Brian. I love the centerpiece! My first thought was “Oh my goodness, how did he do that?” Can’t wait to see the video. I see lots of cards here – baby, valentine, wedding. . . . . . great job!

  18. Brian, this is just the sweetest card. <3 Isn't it interesting that Crisp Cantaloupe and Hello Honey look very good together on the DSP, but that the two solids do NOT! Just thinking about them together as card stock makes me wince. Definitely no big bow … your triple strands of the thick baker's twine is perfect. I, too, am really looking forward to your video and it isn't because there will be accent pillows in the background 😉 I am looking forward to seeing how you did the tiny hearts border. I am also a lover of polka dots and hearts (and butterflies).

  19. this is sweet!

  20. Love the label bracket with the hearts. Very nice combination! Nice choice of color too, instead of pink. I like it!

  21. What a great baby card Brian!! I just love it!

  25. Love love love this. Just got my border punch, cant wait to play with it

  26. Simple and perfect, as usual! So glad you stayed with the Crisp Cantaloupe, Brian.
