Buttoned Up Flower for The Paper Players

Sandy Mathis is hosting a “use one or more buttons on your project” challenge at The Paper Players this week.  I’m not a BUB (that’s an acronym for “Big User of Buttons” that I just made up to add interest to this blog post), so I don’t use buttons a lot on my cards.  My first thought was I’d make a baby card (baby cards are all button-y, right?).  Then, I slapped my hand and demanded that I find a new and unique way to showcase a button.  Buttons, buttons, buttons…

Here’s my card:

Bloom for You, Lots of Thanks, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PP207And here’s the challenge that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • The Button.  I’m guessing you didn’t miss the button on my project, right?  Even though it’s covered up a little bit, it’s front-and-center and plays an important role in this card.  Right there in the center of the flower sits the largest of the Very Vintage Designer Buttons.  The button is backed with a 3/4″ Hello Honey circle and topped with a 1/2″ Hello Honey circle that’s covered with Crystal Effects.  I like the extra shine created by this button-topper.
  • Inking the Flower.  The textured look of this flower was really easy to achieve.  I inked the flower with Hello Honey and then sponged Tangerine Tango and Chocolate Chip over it with sponge daubers.  I really love how these colors achieve a “dead leaf” color – not the look you’d typically want on a flower, but I really like it here.  So easy.Bloom for You, Lots of Thanks, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PP207
  • Color Inspiration.  This card is inspired by the colors of Autumn.  Chocolate Chip, Tangerine Tango and Hello Honey pair nicely with Very Vanilla to create a warm, Fall feel.  This background piece from the Moonlight Designer Series Paper Stack features Hello Honey and Whisper White.  While I would never normally pair Whisper White and Very Vanilla, the lighter, yellow hues of Hello Honey are vanilla enough to pair well with Very Vanilla.

Wow!  After this project, I feel like maybe I COULD become a BUB.  🙂

  1. Hey BUB! This card and the button turned out great!

  2. Fantastic use of buttons! I’m nit a BUB either, but……. I might become one!!

  3. You don’t really have to make up something to add interest to your blog – do you ? 😉 I’m not a BuB myself so THAT is the real challenge in it – not to win but to win over yourself … Anita

  4. Oh Brian – I just Love you! Your blog gives me a huge smile to start my day every day. I can’t help but appreciate your humor – I mean really, BUB? Cracked me up. Thanks for the smile AND for the beautiful card. My first thought also was baby card because we always used to say “cute as a button” which was kind of silly because all our buttons were plain and flat! LOL

The way you arrived at the textured look on the flower was a surprise to me. I would have thought that the Chocolate Chip would over power the other colors but you used the perfect amount with the dauber to create great texture. Fantastic!

So – you go ahead and keep making up acronyms, or whatever you want. They make your blog fun and interesting. Have a fantastic day Brian and keep up the good work.

  5. Just in time for fall, I think I’ll go make some dead leaves, too. LOL, you are sooo funny!
Seriously though, it is a very pretty and clean card.

  6. You do realize that your button topper actually looks like another button, right? I love this card, Hello Honey is one of my favorite colors, and since I love neutrals you pretty much had me at Chocolate Chip. Then add your genius with the dauber. There was no way I would love this card. And to think it started with a button, maybe you’re a BUB -in-training.

  7. Too funny, love your humor, it just cracks me up. Your card rocks! Love all the details that you go through to bring us your final awesome card!

  8. Cute card and I like those little buttons …. I just don`t use them much . I read where you can color them with the Blendies ! And Grace should be your comic sidekick . I got a hoot out of her comment about babies and buttons and being flat and colorless !
Good Monday kick off ,my friend !!

  9. Have to agree I’m not a BUB either. I am really inspired by your crystal effect circle. Now that I will be trying soon.

  10. Great card Brian and an unusual way to showcase a button – I love the button topper too. I’m not much of a BUB either as it goes, although I might have to take issue with you and Grace over your comments about baby cards given my DT entry this week 😉 Thanks for joining us over at The Paper Players today!

  11. Wow, how smart you are, Brian, I like your card.

Grace I like your comments, you said it right!

  14. I love buttons, but I’m not much of a BUB either….I hate paying extra for postage!!! But this one does shine nicely and really adds some pep to your subtle flower! Thanks for sharing this and playing with the Players this week!
