Give Thanks for Fab Friday

Since Stampin’ Up!’s 2014 Holiday was released yesterday, you’d think I would be presenting some incredible new-and-exciting product from inside its beautiful pages.  I didn’t plan my week so well, so I missed out on the “new” part (I used a carryover stamp from last year’s Holiday Catalog and a sentiment stamp from the Annual Catalog), but “exciting” is still there.  🙂  Here’s my card for this week’s FabFriday sketch:

And here’s the sketch that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Sentiment Placement.  When I was planning this card in my mind, I would have a banner across the focal point that includes this sentiment from And Many More.  My planning was a bit off, though, because another banner across the wheat didn’t work well with the two banners I already had – and I didn’t want to cover the wheat.  I had already cropped the image with my Squares Collection Framelits – what to do, what to do?  You already know the answer to this predicament because you’ve already looked at the card, but I’m going to tell you anyway.  This mistake turned into a blessing because I really, really like the sentiment turned on its side (and I probably wouldn’t have done that without being forced into it).  Yay for poor planning.
  • Ever-so-lightly.  The panel of wood, also from Truly Grateful, is stamped two times over top of the wheat.  This image was stamped in Crumb Cake and stamped off three times before beings stamped onto this image to give a very, very light hint of the wood texture.  Didn’t want it to overpower – but didn’t expect that it would barely show up in the photo.  Either way, it adds a touch of texture, and that’s a good thing.Truly Grateful, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FabFri49
  • A Perfect Fall Color Combination.  It’s not difficult to pair Stampin’ Up!’s beautiful colors with one another.  This combination of [various shades of] red, yellow, brown and green work perfectly together to say, “Autumn is in the air” – even when Autumn is not in the air.  🙂  The base panel of Cajun Craze (it’s one of the gorgeous pieces of Color Me Autumn Designer Series Paper) grounds this card.  Along with the three candy cots (also in Cajun Craze), I’ve added enough weight in the lower left corner to balance the large panel on the right.   If you like this color combination, feel free to copy this:Color Inspiration, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

  1. Gorgeous card today! Love the subtle wood background behind the wheat. Another feature that you do, oh so well, is the beautiful snipping of your mossy meadow tie of the wheat bundle. Fantastic colors that layer so richly, nicely done Brian! 🙂

  2. Gorgeous card Brian, I love the very subtle hint of wood in the background, it’s a perfect frame for the beautiful image of the wheat bunch. The colors are so warm and rich and your paper snipping skills really shine, you are truly a master with the scissors. Thank you for sharing.

  3. What a gorgeous fall/Thanksgiving card. I love this stamp set. It would also, with a change in sentiment, make a great “masculine “card.

  4. Love the color combo for the fall (which feels like it is here today, here in Maine!) 🙂

  5. So many good things come out of problem solving. It happens to me too when I am surprised by something that, at first glance, has gone wrong but then turns out to be great. Thanks for sharing, as always!

  6. Great card Brian! Love the color combo too! TFS!

  7. To me this goes perfectly with where we are right now. We have just a hint that Fall’s right around the corner. This was one of my favorite images from the last Holiday catalog. The color scheme works so well with the image and sentiment. Great work Brian

  8. Love it! Another home run (or some similar sports analogy.)

  9. Hi Brian:

As usual, a fantastic card. I absolutely love the color combination, so perfect for fall which is my absolute favorite time of year. I have to agree with you that having the sentiment placed vertically and to the right side of the wheat is just the perfect touch. Another winning card for sure. Thanks for sharing all your talents with us every day.
I don’t know if you realize what an inspiration you are to us. What would we do without you!

  10. Thanks for your tips…………always helpful. I especially like the sentiment placement on this card and the background. Both are understated but pull everything together so well. The colour scheme is also one of my favourites. Thanks for the inspiration Brian, with this wonderful fall card.

  11. Brian,
Beautiful card, but just to let you know Truly Grateful is the Annual Catalog page 152 in case you missed it. My upline also missed that it was in annual catalog and almost sold her set at our annual Christmas in July this year August Christmas sell.

    • Thanks, Janet. I referred to the set as “old” because it’s been around – and I really SHOULD be focusing on brand new stuff in the catalog that was released yesterday. 🙂 I was happy to see it in the Annual Catalog, too. Thanks!

  12. Beautiful card, Brian. I just love the colors you used. May need to cas this for my Thanksgiving cards this year!
