Hello for Freshly Made Sketches

Happy Sunday!  As I get ready for the big week ahead, I’m happy to share a sweet and simple “hello” for this week’s Freshly Made Sketches challenge.  This project is clean and easy but still has some fun elements to make things interesting.  Here’s my card:

Four Feathers, Hi There, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS153And here’s the sketch that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • The Paper and Feathers Connection.  When I first this piece of Designer Series Paper from Confetti Celebration, I thought the design resembled a Native American pattern.  As soon as I saw Four Feathers and the coordinating Feather Framelits, I knew I’d pair these two together.  For over a week, several feathers have been sitting on a swatch of this paper, waiting for the right time to use them.  The paper was just too busy to be the focal point, though.  I knew this paper and these feathers would find a home as soon as I saw this sketch.
  • The Switch-em-up.  My original concept for this card was to include three different feathers in a cluster and keep this Designer Series Paper as the background.  I was struggling.  As I approached this card (with its modified use of the paper and scripted “hello” I thought I could use the feather to look like a pen plume – I’d cleverly have the feather extend off the right side of the word.  Things just weren’t balanced.  In the end, the feather resting along the bottom of the circle was just prettier and more calming to me – and it gave me the balance I needed.
  • The Envelope Liner.  I love the patterns in this paper, but it can be “a bit much” in large doses.  Since I clearly wanted it to be an important part of this card, I lined the inside of the envelope with the same paper.  It gives me just the right amount of Confetti Celebration paper – AND since the recipient will first see the patterned paper on the flap of the card, the “callback” on the face of the card reinforces the importance of this pattern to the design of the card.

  1. I really love this card – love the feather. A great all-purpose card!

  2. Perfect amount of this paper, it minimizes the busyness. I think the feather is in the perfect spot! Great job with the sketch.

  3. This has got to be my favorite card using the the Four Feathers stamp set!!! The bright colors just pop of the Basic Grey with a hint of WWhite! Plus a little bit of this particular DSP goes a long way so you have the perfect amount of it! I love just the one feather and its placement. Your card is “perfection”!

  4. What a beautiful card, I really like the bright colors.

  5. Love the pattern and the bright colors! A fun, happy card!

  6. Absolute perfection!! Love how you explained each step of your design because so often a simple card SEEMS like it took no time at all, but actually took more thought and process than a more complex one. When you only have a few elements, the placement and color are even more critical to a great result. That gray card base with the white mats make that fun paper really pop!

  7. Wow! I like the way you used this busy DSP, something you are good at and something I need to learn! Super nice card, with the gray toning down everything to make it pleasing and calming and right for a number of occasions. Very nice, Brian!

  8. Brian, even before I started reading your description of this beautiful card, the DSP reminded me of the Native American designs and colors we saw on our trips to the South West with our grandkids. You are right, some DSP is way to busy to make it the focal point of any card so you did a wonderful job with this particular one. The sentiment and that beautiful feather should be the center of attention and in this instance, the DSP is just a compliment. 🙂
    Thank you for sharing.

  9. Just the right amount of pattern! The feather looks like it is calmly floating by – cute!

  10. Great card Brian! I love those colours together and that focal sentiment and feather is fabulous! Thanks for joining us this week at Freshly Made Sketches!
