The Winter Blues with PPA231

It’s neither icy nor snowy in Atlanta this time of year.  I’ve never made a snowman on Christmas, and I’ve certainly never shoveled my way through a pile of snow.  Still I feel connected to all the wintery scenes I see at Christmastime – the landscape looks so gorgeous when it’s dusted with snow.  I created a wintery “hello” for this week’s Pals Paper Arts Color Challenge  Here’s my card:

#hello, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA231And here’s the PPA challenge banner for the colors that inspired my creation:PPA231

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Create Movement.  The beautiful dots in the background of this All is Calm Specialty Designer Series Paper remind me of falling snow (I think the designers of this paper had that in mind, too).  I wanted to honor the action of the falling snow by creating additional movement, so I added a white banner under the sentiment – at least in my mind, this banner seems to be whipping through the snowy sky, pulling the sentiment through the snow.  Do you see it, too?  Or am I just crazy.
  • White Embossing and Negative Space.  It’s no secret that I love White Stampin’ Emboss Powder.  I do.  I especially love using it on negative images – in this “hello” – the ink (or, in this case, VersaMark) is applied to the surface of the circle, and the letters remain uninked.  That gives me a bold canvas of white and allows the letters to be the color of the paper.  Fun, huh?  And, how stinkin’ cute is that sentiment?!?
  • One-Two-Three.  It might be difficult to tell, but all three colors are represented in this card – I promise.   The card base and scalloped circle are Pool Party, while the Designer Series Paper is Soft Sky.  Bermuda Bay is captured in the thin frame around the front panel, in the thick strip across the front and the sentiment itself.  I originally used Pool Party Stampin’ Emboss Powder on the sentiment, but it popped better with White.

So,what are your thoughts about this color combination?  I hope you can see lots of possibilities for these blues.  I hope you’ll pop over to the Pals Paper Arts Challenge to check out the projects by the other design team members and join us this week with your own creation.

  1. Lovely colors and a striking card! I love the falling snow on the DSP. Reminds me of the Charlie Brown Christmas animation somewhat. 🙂

  2. Baby it’s cold outside here in Ohio! Cute card!

  3. I’m new here, Brian, and I have to say, it’s so fun reading your blogs! You make them interesting and cause me to think. I agree with your banner being white and giving the feeling of whipping through the snow. I also Love the sentiment in mostly white with the pop of blue. Beautiful card! I grew up in Massachusetts so I know all too well about shoveling snow, but it was fun having a real White Christmas!

  4. Oh I love these colors ! Your card is pretty and serene . It suggests snow without one snowball or snowman ! Love that thin thin layer !
I know you are a King ,but you are also Lord of the Layers !!

  5. You totally captured your vision. Color combo….thumbs up! Welcome to Roberta for joining in the fun here. You are going to love it. Brian is a super guy!

  6. Love the card. I have also lived where Christmas was usually not White.
I just noticed your “moving” supply list, is that new or have I just never noticed it before?? I like it— Fancy!! Hugs!!!

  7. If you ever get to Maine you can definitely try your hand at shoveling! 🙂

  8. Oh Brian, I wish you could come up here and help us out shovel all the snow that falls here during the Winter time, I can see you making snow men with my grandkids and maybe having a snow ball fight 😉 Last Winter we were just about buried in feet and feet of snow, it looks beautiful but the shoveling is hard.
I love your card, the colors are so perfect, snow falling DSP, perfect, cheerful sentiment, perfect, Thank you for sharing.

  9. I’m live in sunny California, what’s a snowball?
Just kidding, I’m originally from Michigan and have made lots of snowmen, snowballs and shoveled my way out the driveways countless times. I miss the beauty of it.
Brian your card is clean, just like the first snow of the season. Nice job!

  10. Brian – come to Maine in the winter and you can visit both Dawn and me. We will teach you how to make a snowman and even take you ski doing! I promise it will all be great fun!

I think the three blues together are gorgeous. Each is a compliment to the other and by using the white embossing powder you did make this fabulous sentiment stand out. I love this card!

  11. Your blues put a smile on my face. Beautiful card as always Brian.

  12. Well, hello there! Super winter card Brian!

  13. Brian, your card is lovely. The different shades of blue card stock and the movement in the DSP, definitely brings to mind the cold white stuff. I’m not saying that word, nope not putting that out in the universe, not after last year.

  14. I do love the color combination and your use of layers Brian. I enjoy your description of the card. Here in Australia we usually have a heat wave over Xmas but enjoy the pretty snow scenes on television etc.

  15. The color combinations are lovely. Having lived in climates where winter does bring snow to shovel and car window to scrape this card reminds me of the beautiful side to a winter snow. Thanks for the idea.

  16. Oh Brian, if only the snow in Chicago were as fresh and clean as the snow on your card! It does get tedious, but you really haven’t lived until you’ve shoveled 5 feet of snow off a 150 foot driveway! Happy Winter!
