What Makes You Happy

I’m a huge proponent of happiness – we all deserve to be happy and should do the things that bring us joy.  As soon as I saw this sentiment from Hello Life, a new photopolymer stamp set in the upcoming Occasions Catalog, I knew I’d feature it on a card.  I love the sentiment, and I love the way it’s scripted.  Here’s the card I made:

Hello Life, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • New papers.  Sale-a-Bration starts January 6 – there are so many great products you can earn with every $50 purchase.  Best Year Ever Designer Series Paper, featured above, is one of the options – and it’s SO worth it.  The paper is filled with luscious patterns and colors.  The layers above are soft shades of Calypso Coral and Coastal Cabana.  Beautiful, huh?
  • Layering.  I just love the beauty of simple layers.  A clean card can still result from lots of layers of cardstock.  This card has six total layers – each one plays an important role in supporting the focal point (the sentiment).  If you missed my video about creating borders and frames, you can see it here.
  • Hazy sentiment.  The soft blue page of Best Year Ever Designer Series Paper showcases the bokeh effect, the look of blurred lights.  I love it!  Rather than stamping the sentiment in dark, solid black (which also would have looked nice), I decided to stamp the sentiment with Tuxedo Black Memento ink, leaving a lighter image that goes well with the bokeh.

Coming up this Week.  It’s Christmas week, and you’ve got plans.  I know.  I’m still here, and I’ve got lots of fun things planned – including a new card and video tomorrow, a recap of my favorite Christmas cards from this season and a PPA sketch for the record books.  I’ll be sharing some more Sneak Peeks later in the week.  Woo hoo!

  1. Great card Brian. Have a Merry Christmas!

  2. Beautiful card and sentiment I can attest that your are a contagiously happy person; thanks for spreading your sunshine all over the world! I have a question: what’s a bokeh?

    • Bokeh is the look of the blurred lights (the blue paper above captures that). Kinda like the closeup pictures of a lighted Christmas tree or out-of-focus cityscape.

  3. I love love this sentiment ! It makes me happy with it`s twirly font ….and you make me happy with being YOU ! Also thank you for explaining what bokeh really is . I wasn`t quite sure if it meant blurred images or what ???
Looking forward to your upcoming video this week .

  4. Words to live by…I love the saying on this stamp. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Brian – thanks for reposting the link to your video on framing and matting. The timing was perfect – I was going to ask you today for some tips, and voila, the answer was here. Hopefully by using your suggestions I can cut back on some tedious measuring. I admire the precision of your work. Thanks, and happy holidays.

  6. Another great card! Love it.

  7. Brian you don’t even have to squint to see that this beautiful card is in perfect alignment.. AND , the sentiment should be posted on everyone’s fridge as a reminder!
Thanks so much for sharing, I appreciate your eye.

  8. Beautiful card Brian, I love the DSP. This card has an ethereal quality that is really appealing. I can’t wait for Jan. 6. Great job

  9. Brian, your card is just so beautiful. Simple, clean and classy. I was also wondering about Bokeh…. so thanks for explaining it. I’ve seen others do Bokeh with sponge daubers, but this paper makes it quick and easy. Great card! Thanks for making US so happy…. you rock my friend! 🙂

  10. Hi Brian:

I think any time you layer with black as the borders it truly emphasizes the beauty of the stamp used and this card is a fabulous example of that. Just a “simple” card made elegant by the border paper. You are AMAZING! (but you already knew that!) LOL
