Mediocre Sheet Cake for Freshly Made Sketches

Happy Monday!  I hope you had a wonderful weekend.  Today’s birthday card for Freshly Made Sketches is right up my alley – it’s clean and classic, and evokes quite a giggle at the same time.  Bombs Away Birthday is one of Stampin’ Up!’s outside-the-catalog photopolymer stamps sets – and it’s a must-have.  I thought it would be perfect for this week’s Freshly Made Sketches challenge.  Here’s my card:

Bombs Away Birthday, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, FMS173

And here’s Kim Singdahlsen’s sketch that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Bombs Away Birthday.  Did you miss this stamp set when it was released?  I’ve had it for a long time, and this is the first time I inked it up.  I haven’t seen it used very much, so it’s possible you have overlooked it.  Why did I choose this set today?  I thought the bomb image (which I ultimately didn’t use) paired well with a black-and-white card.  I think the sentiment (“an occasion like this calls for a mediocre sheet cake from the grocery store”) is absolutely hysterical.  In case you missed this set, here’s the image of the stamp set along with all the other great sentiments (you can click on it to see the image in my online store):
  • Humor in cards.  I don’t often select the stamp sets with humor – I think you can only use them so many times, and I worry that I might repeat the same sentiment for someone’s card year-over-year.  That’s just ridiculous.  This set has so many sentiments that should grace the front of many cards.  I love them – all poking fun at getting old.  This set makes my “approved” list.
  • Black and White.  It’s really tricky to layer-up a black-and-white card.  You really have to carefully plan each and every layer.  The “crooked layer” of Designer Series Paper was originally a paper with a solid black background and white images.  I was going to just layer the white sentiment layer on top with no black backing.  That all changed when I realized the sentiment would hang over the edge, giving me what cardstock on white cardstock.  No, no.  I changed up the background page and added a tiny layer.  Ahhhh.  That worked.

  1. Love your card this morning, Brian, and the sentiment

  2. You are so darn good at this, Love it just love it!

  3. What a cute sentiment! It would be great for my masculine friends. I have lots of flowery stamps, but find it hard to make things for my guys. I think they would get a kick out of the sayings in this set. I didn’t even know it existed. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

  4. Cute card ….I apparently overlooked this set . Love those slivers you call thin layers . I think you were right adding that skinny black layer because it sets off the whole pattern .
    Happy Monday !

  5. I have made a card at stamp cap with a stamp from this set–the Classic Rock sentiment. But I like all the other sentiments, too. Out of curiosity, or just plain morning fog, what is the object below the sentiment? It makes me think of the hairstyle on the chubby boy from that old hamburger chain. “Something Big Boy?” Help me, help me!

    • Marcia, Ha! The shape, to me, looks like a little flame. I think it’s part of the retro vibe and plays on the bomb that I didn’t include on the front of this card. 🙂

  6. What a great card, Brian! The sentiment made me laugh out loud! I may have to case this for my brother-in-law who has a birthday this week. Now I just have to figure out where that stamp set is. I know I bought it!

  7. Where on God’s green earth did that stamp set come from. Just goes to show you have to go check the online store on a regular basis because new stamp sets are added all the time that aren’t in any catalogs. Especially photopolymer I’ve noticed. How fun. I love to shop and find new things “on the rack”. Thanks for sharing, Brian.

  8. My kind of card! And might I add that I love those grocery store cakes! Buy them for myself all the time……..drives my family crazy…they hate them……I call them celebratory cakes because they have cakes to celebrate everything. Last one I bought had big plastic Super Bowl footballs on it…….don’t have to worry about deflating those…lol!

  9. Brian, I love your crativeness, your ideas, and plain love your blog! You have such a wonderful way with words. Thanks for sharing you with us 🙂 I wish I had your talent and creativeness both with the crafting and the blogging! xxx

  11. Now why don’t I use this set too? I also have it, and have never inked it up. This is an awesome card Brian. I totally agree that it can be used again and again. It has very cute sentiments and images. I love your layers and the layout and you have, as always, made a perfect card! Hugs!

  12. This is a very graphically appealing card, I love all the patters on the paper, great way to frame this very funny sentiment.
Thank you for sharing and have a great week.

  13. I laughed aloud!! (Maybe I even snorted a little!) It’s a fabulous sentiment and it all works perfectly with the basic black and white prints. Thank you for playing along with us at Freshly Made Sketches.

  14. I love this stamp set because I love funny cards. It looks familiar, but I had forgotten about it. You enabler you!

  15. Gorgeous monochromatic card! All these papers go so well together and you can’t help but smile at that sentiment! Thanks so much for joining us at Freshly Made Sketches.
