New Video & Card: Painting and Shading Indescribable Gift with Blender Pens

There’s an indescribable excitement when a project I’m working on takes a sudden turn, when the project I was planning simply becomes something else.  It’s even more exciting when that finished project is more appealing than your initial venture would have generated.  Today’s card is for this week’s CAS(E) This Sketch Challenge.  I had so much fun with this card that I also made a video to share with you.  Here’s my card:

Indescribable Gift, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, CTS110 And here’s Leigh Penner’s sketch that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

    • Listen to your Art (Supplies).  As I mentioned above, this card took a sharp turn when I sat down to make it.  I was GOING to build my beautiful branch with soft pink and white petals and little pops of light green.  It was going to be beautiful.  I decided on a Crumb Cake Base and knew I would paper-piece the flowers on.  Once the image was stamped, though, I didn’t want to add color.  I listened to my project and allowed it to take me in a different direction.  What a thrill!Indescribable Gift, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, CTS110
    • Blender Pen.  Every stamp space must have a Blender Pen.  Not only are they perfect for adding light color to an image, they are also wonderful for blending a color as shown in this project.  I have several Blender Pens – one is marked for use with bleach.  The others are interchangeable.  No worry if the tip stains – as long as you wipe out the color on a clean scrap of paper, the colors won’t bleed with the next color you use.
    • Video.  Here’s a quick video I filmed to share this card and technique:

I hope you’ll pop over to CAS(E) This Sketch to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s sketch.

    • Thank you! And your English is WONDERFUL! I nervously checked the sound on my iPad and computer, and it’s working for me. If you are watching on an iPad, you might have to enable the sound with the little switch on the right. I hope you are able to listen to it. 🙂 Thanks!

  10. Hi Brian:

I am a huge fan of monochromatic cards but would never have thought to use crumb cake for a spring or Easter card. Well, by now I should realize you are going to open my eyes to something new every single day! Thank you for enlightening me in so many ways.

  11. What a beautiful card, and so simple! I had forgotten all about the blender pen. Thanks for the reminder! (And I’m glad the table was not ruined.)

  12. Thanks Brian, the first time I used blender pens I was a little heavy handed, I see you can get great results with a little practice. I love your less is more cards.

  14. Beautiful! Wonderful take on the sketch!

  16. Hello Brian, thank you very much for all these good ideas! I m waiting each day for your post!!!! Please can you help me, because I always have problems with the dimensions of the card, and how many inches or centimètres for the other one in colours and another one etc.. do you have a rule or something like that? Thanks a lot. From Paris… isabelle

  18. An amazing card, Brian, never would have thought that would come out so pretty on crumb cake. Guess it is time to listen to supplies. Great point! Thanks!

  19. onderful video Brian, and as always, a beautiful card. I have been eyeing that stamp for some time; you’ve convinced me to just get it. I never think to use my blender pen at all and now I will. This is a great idea, and I thank you for sharing. I also have been having a hard time hearing you when you are facing the camera. But when the person shooting the video stands behind you, it’s a bit louder. I’ve turned my sound all the way up for yours, and sometimes it’s still hard to hear. But in any case, I just make sure my phones don’t ring, or my cat doesn’t meow at me, because I don’t want to miss a single thing! Thanks again for all you do!

  20. Such a lovely card, I never thought that stamping on this darker CS would look this amazing, and you reminded me about my Blender Pens, I had forgotten how beautiful your stamped image can look using them.
    Thank you for sharing.
