New Video: How to Create a Herringbone Background

The last three days have all been leading up to today’s video post.  Yippee!  If you have been following along, then you are ready to enjoy the video.  If you haven’t been following along, then here’s a recap of what’s been going on (click on the day to see the post):

  • SUNDAY – we reviewed my Product Shares and DSP Swatch Books
  • MONDAY – I shared a video and brief write-up about pairing patterns in printed papers
  • TUESDAY – I shared a gorgeous card from Kylie Bertucci that uses Bohemian Designer Series Paper and a herringbone pattern.

If you missed it, here’s Kylie’s card:

by Kylie Bertucci, Stampin' Up!, I Think You're Great, Bohemian Designer Series PaperToday’s video gives you more information about how you, too, can create this beautiful background on your papercrafting projects.  About two years ago, I made a whole bunch of herringbone cards and really enjoyed playing around with the patterns.

What is herringbone?  While it’s best known as a pattern in dressy suits and scarves, it’s also found in brickwork and wooden floors.  The best way to describe Herringbone is to show you:

Herringbone patternsWith strips of Designer Series Paper or card stock, you can create your very own herringbone patterns.  Here’s how:

I hope you enjoyed my video and that you will give Herringbone a try!  Super fun!  Here are some other projects I created a couple of years ago that show the diversity of this technique – along with a written step-by-step tutorial in the post for the last card:

  1. How many packets of Tim Tams am I sending you again?? I found something else that I want you to try – but you must film yourself eating it. Limited edition Vegemite Cadbury chocolate….. 🙂 Only in Australia….

    • This is not stamping related, but you had to see the Tonight Show a week or so ago when Jimmy Fallon tried Vegemite. It did not go down well. However, Hugh Jackman came on the show about a week later and showed Jimmy how it should be eaten: on toasted bread spread with a thin layer of Vegemite. Then he liked it, as did a member of the show’s band. It was much funnier than I can describe it. But Vegemite Cadbury chocolate. . . . Not sure about that.

  2. Very cool! Love learning something new. Thanks, Brian! And a great use for all those strips I throw away!

  9. Hi Brian:

WOW! When I first opened this site today I kind of asked myself if I was on the wrong site! I had no idea you were “remodeling”! LOL I love the new clean look.

I just returned late last evening and the first thing I saw in the huge pile of mail was the new SU catalog! I cannot wait to get unpacked and be able to sit and drool over all the new items. It will be a few days before I get that far but hey, it’s incentive for me to play catch up on all the other stuff.

Thank you for sharing that wonderful video. Frankly I had forgotten all about the herringbone technique and, since I have tons of small scraps that need a home, this technique will surely fill the bill.

I need to get my swatch order to you. Things are so crazy here please have patience with me. Again, love the new website look. Hugs.

  10. This is great as always! My OCD leads me to prefer the cards that use the same paper in each direction so I can make out the pattern. But, I may have to try the other method, too, just to step out of my self-imposed box. Love the new look of the blog!

  11. Used this technique for the first time and love it! We’re giving a quilt to a friend for a retirement gift, and this card has a bit of a quilt effect – it’s perfect!
