I Think You’re Great for PPA253

I’m playing around with the NEW 2015-2017 In Colors today – and a NEW stamp set from the upcoming catalog.  Oh, and a NEW Designer Series Paper Stack.  Yippee!  Today’s blog post is all-new – and I’m excited to share my project with you for this week’s PPA sketch.  Here’s my card:

I Think You're Great, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA253

And here’s Nicole Watt’s super-fun sketch that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Follow the Pattern.  I was a little taken aback by the layout of this week’s Pals Paper Arts sketch.  While I wasn’t sure how I’d recreate this zigzag pattern at the base of the front panel, I flipped through the patterns in Cherry on Top, a bright and cheery paper stack (6″ x 6″ pages) in the upcoming Annual Catalog.  There were so many beautiful patterns to choose from, but THIS pattern seems made for this challenge.  With a little strategic planning, I was able to recreate this zigzag in the patterns of the paper.  Just my paper snips and a pattern.  How cool is that?  Take a look at my card to see how only one of the five columns of pattern is cut.  Kismet!  I layered the paper on a piece of Watermelon Wonder cardstock and then snipped the base to move with the Cherry on Top paper.  Perfection!
  • Bordered Band.  I tried and tried to create banners on the piece that rests beneath the sentiment.  It was clashing with the pattern in the Cherry on Top Designer Series Paper Stack paper – and we can’t have that!  I decided to hang the sentiment on a band with a flat top and base.  To add a bit of interest, I snipped a piece of Watermelon Wonder cardstock the same width of the band and just a wee bit longer to stick out above and below.  That little pop of color really helps pull this card together – do you agree?
  • Fair Warning.  You are going to love this stamp set – I promise.  There’s so much fun to be had with these sentiments and images.  While the sentiment shown here is cropped with a circle punch, the sentiment itself is not a perfect circle (by design).  That’s kinda’ charming, but without my warning, you would eyeball this over and over and over again, wondering why the punch was not perfect.  The secret (as you now know) is that the stamp is the imperfect image.  Check the bottom, right edge of the image.  🙂

New Products.  As I mentioned in the opening of today’s blog post, this card is filled to the brim with new products.  Yippee!  You can’t order these just yet, but I wanted to share links to the items so you can take a look-see.  🙂

  1. Love that paper! Perfect for the sketch Brian. The Watermelon and Taupe look awesome together. Thanks for the new word to add to my vocab too – Kismet.

  2. This is a “head scratcher” sketch . You did a good job considering that off setting bottom . Can`t go wrong with these great new colors ….love them . Cute card !

  3. Brian, you certainly picked a great DSP to make the offset bottom and solved the busyness of it with the solid straight bands. It works beautifully and makes the card look as though it is folded. I love this card and will have to CASe it.

  4. Awesome how that design and paper came together.I wish I could pick up on things and be so creative.

  5. You have done a marvelous job with using that zigzag at the bottom, Brian! I love this dp with the sketch…beautiful card~

  6. Great use of the sketch combined with the Cherry on Top pattern. You’re right, that chevron really works to create the zig zag on the bottom. I’m loving the new In Colors and here’s another combo to put in the idea bank.

    • I absolutely love this card. I would love to see you do a video because I cannot figure out how you did the bottom to make it look zig zag.

      Thanks for sharing.

      Linda D.

      • Thanks, Linda! It’s really quite simple – I cut the base with a pair of scissors. Because the paper already had the slants I needed, I just followed the pattern. When I was done cutting the printed paper, I glued it to card stock and then snipped just under the edge of the printed paper.

  7. HI Brian:

I am in awe of the way you managed to get the bottom cuts of the Watermelon Wonder card stock so perfectly aligned with the rows on the DSP! WOW! WOW! WOW! (By the way, I think you are awesome too!). I believe the design of this card is not only unique but definitely eye catching. What a fabulous job you did with this sketch Brian. You are amazing.

  8. I agree with Grace, eye catching!

  9. Love the new blog design and this card rocks! I follow your blog daily and really enjoy your design tips. I’m not sure where you get them, but I am really glad you share them so freely!

  10. I’m so glad that the DT didn’t shy away from my sketch this week! Lovely work as usual, Brian 🙂 I’m glad you were able to find DSP that worked with the zig-zag. I considered following the curves on the piece of Park Lane I decided to use to make a curved zig-zag, but that was just too much! LOL!

  11. Very clever interpretation of this week’s sketch! Can’t wait to get some of that Tip Top Taupe & Watermelon Wonder. I know I’m going to love the new In -Colors!

  12. Awesome job. I’m in awe of your fussy cutting ability!!! 🙂

  13. Ginger Toivonen

Love the precision of your card Brian & of course the choice of dsp!

  14. Um – your zig zag with the paper is genius.

  15. Just live this card. I feel a case in My future card class. TFS!!
