A Birthday Celebration for FabFri

Happy Friday, y’all!  Today, I’m sharing my card for this week’s Fab Friday Color Challenge – Hello Honey, Marina Mist and Night of Navy.  There are so many ways to go with the combination of colors – and none of them are wrong.  I really wanted to play around with a couple of elements from a new stamp set called Build a Birthday, so I created this card:

And here’s the banner for the FabFri65 challenge that inspired my birthday party:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Cupcake Platter.  The Build a Birthday photopolymer stamp set comes with patterned bands that can be used to build a cake on this fun cake platter.  Instead, I reached for my somewhat neglected (for no fault of its own) Cupcake Party to add a fun cupcake to the platter.   The sentiment, candle and platter are all from the Build a Birthday set.  I love this scripted sentiment so much and was happy to use it on this card.
  • A Candle Oopsie.  Build a Birthday is versatile to let us turn the bands that make cake layers into candles – yippee!  My plan was to simply stamp the flame so that it would pop right over the top of the cupcake.  Nope.  Didn’t happen.  I was distracted and stamped the candle flame too low.  Doh!  I was not about to start all over, so I stamped the flame on scrap paper and snipped it out.  There’s a flame still burning underneath that cupcake!
  • Simple Layout.  With this large front panel, it was inevitable that I would end with a simple layout.  The band of Hello Honey background paper lightens things up with a small wisp of color and energy.  It pulls attention to the flame, too.  Without intending to, this FabFriday color challenge project is really very similar to my last FabFriday sketch challenge entry (also a birthday card – see that one here).

    Love this!

  3. The good thing about cardmaking is errors are so quickly fixed-one way or the other! Thank you for showing us even the experts make errors. Love the card nonetheless!

  4. Suzie Patt Cullen

Such a cute card! Love the little cupcake on the cake platter. And that flame is perfect! The way you used lots of white with these three particular colors is super!

  5. Ahhhh, my favorite colors! Love the card too. I like the cupcake on the cake platter, place of prominence.
    🙂

  6. Fabulous Birthday card Brian, I love the cupcake alone on top of the platter and, if you made a mistake, you fixed it perfectly. Love the pop of beautiful yellow in the background and on the sentiment, the font is lovely.
By the way Brian, I just love the new layout for your blog, it’s so beautiful and inviting, I’m sorry I didn’t mentioned sooner.

  7. Love the crisp clean look of your card Brian! TFS!

  8. Love this, Brian! However, the recipient will have one crisply burnt cupcake when they receive it!!! 🙂

  9. Cindie McDuffee

Cute! I’ll try the color combo today, I neglect Marina Mist!

  10. Oh Brian – I learn so much from you. Today it’s the fact that the cake layers can be used as candles. So simple once you pointed it out to me but prior to that I would never have thought to turn the layer on it’s short side to have it stand as a candle on it’s own. Goes to show you that I am not very good at seeing all the possibilities. I think this card is outstanding and just love the way you offset the main image layers so that a bit of the background DSP showed on the side. I bow to your talents of King of design. LOL 🙂

  11. Well you had me at Midnight Navy, but there are other things I love about this card. Hello Honey has been a favorite of mine since they launched last year’s catalog, so double check on colors. The DSP complements the card beautifully. Last, but far from least, nothing says Happy Birthday quite like a flaming cupcake.

  12. Love the card with its timeless yellow and blues. Using the cupcake on the platter was a stroke of genius! Well done!
