So Sweet for GDP001

Today is a great day!  Not only is today the last day of a three-day weekend in the United States (happy Labor Day, y’all!), but the entire world is celebrating the launch of The Global Design Project.  I can hear the cheers and chants from my back porch – and I’ll be watching for the world celebrations on the news tonight.  The Design Team for this brand new card challenge site was formed with Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators from all over the world – literally.  Demonstrators from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, England, Scotland and Germany were asked to join the team – and I’m honored to be included in the talented assembly of artists.  Global Design ProjectI hope you will play along with this week’s challenge and follow us on our super-fun journey!  The first challenge is a Color Challenge – Smoky Slate, Pink Pirouette and So Saffron.  What a soft and sweet palette!  I opted for the “soft and sweet” theme when I created my card for this first challenge – GDP001.  Here’s my card:

Made with Love, Hello Life, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, GDP001

And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:GDP-001

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Graphic Panels.  While the sweet, but somewhat insecure, bunny from Made with Love is the star of this card, the three panels from the Designer Series Paper Stacks create an interesting backdrop for the little guy.  I started with a base of So Saffron paper cut just a little bit bigger than I wanted.  I glued down a strip of Pink Pirouette paper, lining up the stripes along the So Saffron.  That meant some paper hung over the edge and was (dare I say) wasted.  I did the same with the Smoky Slate band that stretches horizontally across the front.  After the extra pieces were stripped away, I was ecstatic with the (still soft) graphic appeal.
  • A First Time for Everything.  Since long before I joined Stampin’ Up! in 2012, Stampin’ Up! has sold a paper punch called the Owl Builder punch.  The variety of shapes can be used to dress up an adorable punch-art owl.  Never once have I used the punch – but there’s a first time for everything.  While searching for a collection of sweet hearts to float above my bunny’s head, I stumbled across the skinny heart in the Owl Builder – and history was made.  I used a pair of tweezers to gently place the hearts above my bunny’s droopy ear.

  • Paper Snipping.  This bunny is sweetly perched on the flat top of the “so sweet” sentiment – it’s like the two were meant for each other.  While I certainly could have colored in the bunny, giving him dimension and artistic flair, I decided to make him the bold, standout star on this card by snipping him from Smoky Slate cardstock.  I stamped him once on the Whisper White circle, once on the Smoky Slate cardstock and once on another piece of Whisper White (for his fluffy tail).  His whiskers just pop out from under the Smoky Slate snip – I was not about to snip around those tiny details.  🙂

Stamp Sets:  Made with Love, Hello Life  Papers:  Pink Pirouette, Smoky Slate, Whisper White, Subtles Designer Series Paper Stack (Pink Pirouette and So Saffron), Neutrals Designer Series Paper Stack (Smoky Slate)  Inks:  Archival Basic Black  Accessories:  2″ Circle punch, Circles Collection Framelits, Owl Builder punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals

I hope you’ll pop over to The Global Design Project to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.  We’ll be back each week with more challenges – and I would LOOOVE to see you play along.

Thanks for stopping by today!

  11. One of the MANY reasons I am drawn to your designs is your attention to details (and your use of layers). The stripes work perfectly b/c of the time you took to line them up. It is so restful for the eyes.
You MUST make more use of the owl punch! He is perfect this time of year for Halloween(in costumes), as Santa or a penguin.
