Antique Tags for PPA

This week’s Pals Paper Arts sketch is simple – and I love it!  I was excited to use the Santa Claus image from Antique Tags, one of the Host stamp sets available in Stampin’ Up!’s 2015 Holiday Catalog.  Since I also love the holly print from Home for the Holidays Designer Series Paper, I thought this would be a great time to combine the two.  Here’s my card for this week’s Pals Paper Arts sketch challenge:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders.

  • Modern on Vintage.  I love this old-school pattern of holly – very reminiscent of wrapping paper the 1960’s.  While I certainly love the look of it, I don’t often make vintage cards, so I accented the showcase of holly with big, bold stripes to coordinate with the sketch challenge.  I think this gives the vintage look a very modern feel.  The small pops of Very Vanilla on either side of the red strip pull the eye right to the stripes.
  • Red on Santa.  I love this vintage Santa – you can almost see his finger pointing at you to say “no peeking!”  I wanted my sentiment and my jolly elf to be two different colors.  Easy fix – I stamped the entire image in Mossy Meadow and cropped it with a 2″ Circle punch.  I then stamped the image in Real Red and snipped out Mr. Claus.  The tricky part was the curve of the circle underneath him.  When I had him where I wanted him, I glued him to the Mossy Meadow image.Antique Tags, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA272
  • Clean on Busy.  Not only are the gorgeous holly patterns old-fashioned, but they are very busy.  I helped keep this card clean by keeping a big, bold base of Real Red on the outside of the pattern (the card base) and a large border of Real Red around the punched image.  Not only does the 2-1/2″ circle create clean space around the Antique Tag Santa, but it creates distance between the image and the busy paper beneath it.

Wonderful, looks just like a big present that is not to be opened! Another great card using that set I wanted to get as hostess of the card club I belong to. Alas, the demo had her baby and my month was cancelled. It looks like a wonderful set. Anyway, quick question: The green vanilla and red strip – did you purposely not put the red and vanilla in the center of the green but put it down lower? It looks wonderful this way. Maybe just because of the challenge the line is down lower? Just nosey! I would spend way too much time getting it centered and straight and this gives a jaunty look!

    • Thanks, Chris! Yes, I placed the Real Red and Very Vanilla strip near the bottom of the Mossy Meadow strip to closer resemble the sketch. Sorry your card club month was canceled.
