I love when I can combine two challenges to make one beautiful card. For the second week in a row, I’m able to combine a challenge from the Paper Players (this week’s wonderful sketch) and a challenge from Can You Case It? (a great color challenge) to make a card. By pairing the two, I’ve taken two elements off my card off my plate, so all I needed to do was think of a theme and what images I wanted to showcase. Easy, right? Here’s my card I created with these two challenges:
And here’s Claire Broadwater’s fun sketch and Terri Takashige’s color combination that inspired my card:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- Garden in Bloom. I’ve owned the Garden in Bloom stamp set since the 2015-2016 Annual Catalog was first introduced. I don’t do a lot with flowers, so I wasn’t surprised to see that this is the first time I’ve inked up these images. Still, I had a lot of fun with these flowers. I stamped the largest part of the Three-Step Stampin’ flower in Daffodil Delight, highlighted the insides of the flower with Crushed Curry and then stamped the outline with Tuxedo Black Memento ink. It really made these flowers pop!
- Building a Butterfly. After stamping the flowers and butterfly, I snipped each one out with paper snips. It’s really difficult to get a good cut on some tiny, thin images – like the butterfly antennae. It’s just hard to maneuver around the antennae and wings at the same time. Half-way through snipping the butterfly, I made the executive decision (I can do that) to snip the butterfly without the antennae. I stamped the image again and snipped the antennae without the wings and left enough image below the antennae to glue it to the back of the snipped butterfly. Easy as pie! Mmm…I love pie.
- Designer Series Paper Stacks to the Rescue. I can’t say enough about how much I love Stampin’ Up!’s Designer Series Paper Stacks. Each color collection comes with pages in each color, so you are never left out. When I wanted a Tempting Turquoise and Whisper White backdrop for these Daffodil Delight flowers, I had FOUR options to complete my card. Sure, there may be other papers with the color I want, but these paper stacks ensure I always have what I need. I’ve included a link to ALL Designer Series Paper Stacks in my product listing below.
Stamp Sets: Garden in Bloom, Endless Thanks Papers: Brights Designer Series Paper Stack, Temptin Turquoise, Daffodil Delight, Basic Black, Whisper White, Thick Whisper White Inks: Daffodil Delight, Crushed Curry, Tempting Turquoise, Tuxedo Black Memento Accessories: Washi Label punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals
I hope you’ll pop over to the Paper Players site and the Can You Case It? site to see the cards by the design team members and to play along with this week’s challenge.
Thanks for stopping by today!

Thanks, Frenchie. I don’t make a lot of cards with flowers, but I seem to be on a roll this week. 🙂
The colors are so bright and showy! Love the combination. Very well put together. Great card. Thanks!
Thanks so much, Evelyn. These CYCI colors worked well for me.
You are right, Brian. The Paper Stacks sure do come in handy!
Hi Brian:
I got a big smile when I saw this card…….didn’t I just comment on the fact that it seems I always end up using blue when I use yellow? I know, you were trying to make me happy right? LOL Anyway, I really do love the way the paper snipped flowers and butterfly “hang” off the side of the central panel to balance things out! Fabulous job, as always.
All for you, Grace. 🙂 That butterfly was the last element I added to this card – balance. Thanks!
What a delightfully fresh color combination and sweet mix of elements!
Thanks, Mary. I’m not big on flowers and butterflies, but these colors worked wonderfully with those images.
WOW!!! Brian this is a beautiful card! Love the combo!! Thanks for joining CYCI 🙂 Eva
Thanks for the inspiration, Eva!
Terrific card Brian! Great take on the sketch and I love the bright and happy colors you used. Awesome idea to snip the antenna separately.
Thanks, Dana! I’m always trying to find ways to make things easier without sacrificing quality. Glad you like the card.
Brian, this is gorgeous! I just love the script DSP and the color combo! That black strip just makes those beautiful flowers pop! You certainly made my sketch shine! So happy you joined us at The Paper Players this week! XX
Claire – your sketch is wonderful. It really helped me to reach out and use these big flowers. You basically started this card for me. 🙂
Thank you, Brian! I love lots of layers and I know many don’t! So glad you were inspired! XX
Very nice card using flowers, Brian! Your Executive Decision was perfectly executed! Nice way to keep those antennae on the little guy~ I figured you enjoyed a piece of pie every now and then…..
Tee hee. I love when my readers read what I say. 🙂
Mr. Brian,
How great, thanks for posting, this design is nice and looks like it wouldn’t be too intimidating for newbies.
Kelley – Thanks so much. I hope it inspires you to create something similar. 🙂
I love this card, it’s absolutely beautiful . Once again Brian another master piece. Thank you for all the inspiration and great ideas.
Thanks so much, Paula! I appreciate your kind words.
Brian ~ Beautiful card ~ I love the layout and those flowers and butterfly are simply wonderful ~ Thank you for joining us at CYCI ~ Wynne
Thanks so much, Wynne! I appreciate the fun challenge.
Love this bright and cheery card Brian! The script panel works great and the flowers really stand out. I haven’t used this set much either – must go and revisit! Your pie comment made me chuckle – my 10 year old could live on pie and I am partial to a piece of Perkins chiffon pie when I am stateside. Or key lime, or cherry …! Thanks for joining us over at The Paper Players this week!
Brian- LOVE LOVE LOVE your card! Love adding just a hint of black card stock it really makes it pop!! Love the layout and the dimensions with the flowers and the butterfly!! Thanks for joining CYCI! Laura
That black just makes all the colors pop,Brian! Your card is a spring delight! Thanks for sharing at The Paper Players this week. It’s always a treat to see your cards in the gallery.
Wow Brian, love the fact that you too have sets that haven’t seen ink yet. Makes me feel better about a few of mine! The three step stamping on the flowers and butterly is fantastic and i love how you pulled all the elements together. Thank you so much for joining us at CYCI – Chlo ☺
