Timeless Textures for FabFri82

This week’s FabFriday Color Challenge really got my wheels spinning.  How could I combine Mint Macaron, Pool Party and Blushing Bride (all very soft, sweet colors) into a card that’s NOT for a baby.  The “not for a baby” criteria is not part of the challenge at FabFri – it’s just an additional challenge I added for myself.  🙂  In the end, I’m thrilled with what I made.  Here’s my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Custom-Made Designer Series Paper.  Timeless Textures is a new stamp set in Stampin’ Up!’s 2016 Occasions Catalog – it’s a perfect set for creating a weathered texture or vintage appeal.  While “weathered” and vintage” are not words I’d use to describe my projects, it’s fun to step out of the bounds a bit.  I combined this stamp set’s images with these super-soft colors to create a not-so-vintage, custom-made Designer Series Paper.  The soft colors make a perfect backdrop for this sweet image and sentiment.

  • Serene Silhouettes.  I’ve shared many, many projects with the great sentiments from Something to Say since that set first debuted – if you haven’t added that set to an order recently, then you (a) you already have it or (b) you aren’t listening.  That said, I’ve had Serene Silhouettes on my shelf for YEARS and have NEVER, not once used it.  That came to an end when I sat down to make this card.  I love when images from new sets help to bring “old” sets to life.  I’d suggest that Serene Silhouettes might deserve some new consideration.  🙂 What gorgeous images!

  • Purposeful Layering.  I love to layer and perfectly frame cardstock.  “Tell me something I don’t already know, Brian,” said YOU just now.  Because I’m limited by the borders on the circle around the sentiment, that was my starting point.  I created the same width of border around the focal panel and the additional panel of Pool Party.  Although I have an additional layer that separates these pieces from the Pool Party base of the card, I chose to not frame that piece.  This allows the two outward most panels to blend together a bit – and makes the other panels the focus.  When I’m making a card, I try all kinds of layering until I find the fit I’m looking for.

  17. Hi Brian, just wanted to say I love your card style…it’s distinctive, and a big thank you for your diagrams with the arrows and breakdown of items used. While I’ve been making SU cards for years, it’s sell nice to see exactly which set or what color you used. I also love your color suggestions. Sometimes you put colors together that I wouldn’t have tried, but they look great and they encourage your viewers to try new things. Thanks so much!
