Sprinkles of Life for PP285 and CYCI#110

Last week I combined the sketch from The Paper Players and the color challenge from Can You Case It? to create a bright and cheery floral card with Garden in Bloom (you can see that project here).  My card was recognized as a pick by both teams!  Before I share today’s project, I want to offer a huge THANKS! to Linda Callahan (The Paper Players) and Laura Nolan (Can You Case It?) for having such amazing style and incredible taste.  These online card challenges always offer me so much inspiration, so it’s nice to be recognized by the teams.  Thank you!

I combined these same challenges again this week – a Rain or Shine Theme challenge from Sandy Mathis at The Paper Players and a sketch challenge from Elizabeth Thatcher at Can You Case It?.  Here’s my card:Sprinkles of Life, Kinda' Eclectic, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PP285, CYCI#110

And here are the challenge banners that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Sprinkles of Life.  While the Crushed Curry sunshine might be the star of this card, the Lost Lagoon clouds and raindrops are crucial to the story.  I used the adorable, but under-used, Sprinkles of Life to stamp these clouds and drops.  I lightly stamped the clouds on Thick Whisper White and punched them with my Tree Builder Punch (coordinates perfectly with this adorable Ronald McDonald set found on the back cover of Stampin’ Up!’s 2016 Annual Catalog).  I inked up the raindrops from the same set and stamped them off once on scrap paper to achieve a faint spattering of rain from the clouds.

  • Banner Banter.  While Elizabeth’s wonderful sketch calls for two banners extending from the focal image, I decided to go with this great, two-lined sentiment from the set.  Although I had stamped these lines on thin banners, they just looked better on the base of the card.  The top cloud just seems to rest on the opening of the sentiment – and these words really make the rest of this card come together.
  • Perfect Pairing.  I’ve seen a lot of cards where the Designer Series Paper covers the entire face of the card, so I decided to give it a try.  I covered the entire card front with a piece 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″ piece of Flowering Fields Designer Series Paper, one of this year’s amazing Sale-a-Bration items (get it free with a $50 purchase).

QUICK TIP:  To perfectly align the Designer Series Paper with the cardstock base, I used the edge of my Stampin’ Trimmer – one of three methods I share in this video.

Stamp Sets:  Sprinkles of Life, Kinda Eclectic  Papers:  Wildflower Fields Designer Series Paper, Lost Lagoon, Whisper White, Thick Whisper White, Basic Black  Inks:  Lost Lagoon, Crushed Curry, Tuxedo Black Memento  Accessories:  Tree Builder punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals

Thanks for the tip about stamping off the raindrops . It makes a difference ….otherwise it looks like a flock of birds (droppings)have flown over the scene (snicker /giggle)

  5. Great design and an an amazing job combining the two challenges!
    Clever creativity!

  6. Brian, I always love the way you see the possibilities to combine elements from new products with those we already have. That DSP from the wild flowers set is perfect for this! Sprinkles of Life is a great stamp set….perfect for the Ronald McDonald charity this season.

  7. Talk about everything coordinate, wow it sure does. Brian, I love you keen eye.

  8. Oh Brian! Thankfully I don’t often need a card to lift the spirits of someone going through difficult times but when I do I have a hard time putting one together. This card couldn’t be more perfect for those times. I so appreciate your creativity and ability to put stamp sets together combined with beautiful papers. Reminds me of a good soup – you take what you have, combine it all in a pot and end up with a wonderful meal. Thank you for your creativeness (is that even a word? LOL).

    • Grace – As always, thank you so much for your kind words. “Chin up” and “thinking of you” cards are hard to make when you need one but easier if you make them ahead. 🙂 Love the soup reference.

  9. Congratulations on the recognition Brian! Once again, you’ve created a lovely card. I’m always a fan of weather related cards, something about sun rays and clouds. The clean look and layout of this card is really sharp!

Thanks for playing along with our sketch challenge this week at CYCI!
