Shine On with Serene Scenery for GDP40

I’m really excited about this week’s Case the Designer challenge at the Global Design Project.  Not only is Shawn de Oliveira one of the most talented card designers I know (there’s something about every one of his projects that makes me sit back and say, “aaaaah!”), but he’s also a member of my InKing Royalty team.  Shawn shares his amazing projects on his blog, Shawn Stamps.  I’m thrilled to honor him this week with a CASE of his work.

When you CASE someone’s work, you are using their finished project as inspiration to create your own.  You might be inspired by the layout or the color scheme.  You might love the stamp set or the theme of the project.  There are so many ways to be inspired by wonderful projects – this week, we are CASEing a Butterfly Basics birthday card by Shawn.  Here’s my card:

GDP040Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Inspiration.  There’s so much inspiration in Shawn’s card – I was first inspired by the layout of Shawn’s card.  I love the simple layers and the placement of the focal panel.  I am also struck by Shawn’s amazing watercoloring.  I could never watercolor at that level (have I mentioned what a talent he is?), so I turned to the Serene Scenery Designer Series Paper Stack for the focal point of my card.  So that I could best showcase the tall, beautiful picture on this paper, I created my card on a 6″ x 4″ base of Crumb Cake.
  • Sunshine Wishes Thinlits Dies.  Last week I shared a project with the Sunshine Wishes Thinlits Dies (you can see that card here), and I’m sure I’ll be using it lots more.  While the set of Thinlits contains four words (hope, love, sunshine and congrats), I snipped away at the words to create the inspirational sentiment above.  Although you may not be able to tell in the photo, I cropped the letters from Shimmery White cardstock to give them a little sparkly shine.Sunshine Wishes Thinlits, Serene Scenery Designer Series Paper Stack, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, GDP040
  • Color Inspiration.  When I first cropped this piece of Serene Scenery Designer Series Paper Stack, I thought it would pair with Crushed Curry – turns out that was too bright.  The papers list Delightful Dijon, so I gave it a try with great results.  Thanks, Stampin’ Up! for the heads-up about the proper yellow to use.  If you like this combination of colors, too, feel free to save this:Stampin' Up! 20. I have no idea if you’ll see a comment this many months after the original post, but I wanted to say how awesomely brilliant you are with this “shine on”. I’ve just purchased (finally) the Sunshine Sayings /Wishes bundle and was googling ideas with it and the (also finally purchased) Serene Scenery paper. I saw the thumbnail of “shine on” and thought–“that looks like something Brian King would do”…and sure enough! Thanks for all the inspiration!
