Sunshine is on the Way

My amazing stamp club met on Saturday for the first time since the release of Stampin’ Up!’s 2016 Annual Catalog.  While they all came with their wish lists (these ladies understand the importance of staying organized!), I couldn’t wait to share some of my favorites from the catalog with them.  I incorporated a new In Color into each of their projects – what fun!  Today I’m sharing the first project we completed – a completely unexpected color combination that worked for me (they liked it too).  Here’s the card we made:

Sunshine Sayings, Sunshine Wishes Thinlits, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Aside from this unexpected color combination, I want to point out that this card uses only one stamp, no Whisper White/Very Vanilla and no Stampin’ Dimensionals.  That’s quite a feat for me!

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Shocking Color Combination.  I usually save the color combination for last, but these colors demand top billing.  Who would have ever thought that pink and yellow could work?  The flowers were fading against a Whisper White background so I substituted Daffodil Delight and was immediately delighted.  There’s a natural clash between the colors, but I kinda’ like it.  If you like this combination, too, please feel free to save this: Stampin' Up! Color Inspiration: Daffodil Delight, Flirty Flamingo, Basic Black
  • Layering the Flowers.  My first design had a single flower that was cropped in Flirty Flamingo.  I really wanted to flower to have a bit more pizzazz to match this color combination, so I cropped another flower in Basic Black and snipped off the stem before gluing it to the Daffodil Delight card stock.  This added a little more funk and allowed me to give the flower the level of attention it deserves.  That super-cool flower deserves to be showcased.

  • Flip the Lid.  The common inclination is to glue everything down perfectly – we all want to make sure the components of our card stay on the card, right?  When I constructed this card, though, I left the tips of the flower unglued so that I could lightly flip them a bit off the page.  This added the level of dimension I wanted – nothing dramatic.  I simply went under the edges of the flower with my paper snips and rolled the flower tops away from the cardstock base.  Again, not a dramatic difference, but the details can make quite a difference.

Don’t you agree that this combination of die and stamped sentiment is a perfect way to lift someone’s spirits – a wonderful pick-me-up?

You are never sure of color combinations till you try. I do like this card
The ease to make it, color and layout.

  2. I think these new In Colors are going to be fun to play mix and match .
Your combo is coming off as Delightful Dijon with the FF. on my screen . So being the “Color” type as I am ….I tried the DD and FF like you did and I like it !! It is kinda like a Home and Garden color mix !!
Love these dies ! May be because I use to have the nickname Sunshine !
    Cute cute card !

  3. WOW!! This is a very striking color combination, I’ve never would have thought of it but then again, I have no eye for that at all so, I’m grateful for crafters like you Brian, to share your know how in the field of colors.
I really like this sketchy dies, pretty and unique.
    Thank you for sharing.

  4. What an amazing, retro color combination! It’s soft and modern at the same time. The black (think Lydia) is the perfect touch!

  5. Great color combo that I would never have put together. I save your colors for future reference. I love the dies in this set. Your card is so pretty, but not like you to have no Whisper White or Very Vanilla on it. Have a great day!

  6. I don’t think the colors clash at all. I have used pink and yellow together before and love it. I love your card, too!

  7. Thought this was very pretty. I said to myself . . . something is different. Then I read the TT&R, it was the . . . no white on the card. I think it looks great.
    🙂

  8. fun color combo…you do such a great job with the word dies!

  9. I was never really impressed with word dies but I have to admit I’m loving the word dies in this year’s catalog. I mean look at how eye catching the word Sunshine looks in its magnificent script. You did a fab job with the color combination. The use of black brought it all together. Leave it to you Brian to be successful at combining pink and yellow. Great job from a great artist!

  10. Sunshine Sayings bundle just got moved up on my list!

  11. Lovely card Brian. I think the black flower aid depth to the card.
