Badges & Banners for PPA309

Katy McGloin is this week’s Featured Designer at the Pals Paper Arts this week, and she’s chosen a wonderfully unique color palette for her color challenge.  Island Indigo and Sweet Sugarplum are surprisingly wonderful together (who’da thunk it?), and Sahara Sand adds the perfect backdrop for these colors to shine.  I used Badges & Banners and Mixed Borders to create this simple card:

And here’s the banner for the challenge that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Badges & Banners.  I adore the new Best Badge punch – I know I’ll have a lot of fun with this unique shape.  There are several great images in this set that pair perfectly with other punches – 1-3/8″ Circle and Duet Banner.  While there are some really great images in this set (how can you resist this cute bird cage?), I chose to feature the finely-striped background image.  Stamped in Island Indigo on Thick Whisper White, this image gave me the perfect background for my sweet sentiment.  Since the stamp set pairs perfectly with the punch, you might as well get the bundle, right?

  • Just a Little Touch of Texture.  I used the Touches of Texture stamps set to create an almost-invisible texture on the large piece of Island Indigo featured on this card.  I really like to large splotch of drops (that should be the name of a garage band somewhere – “Welcome to the stage – “Splotch of Drops!”) in the stamp set and opted to step outside of my typical “just keep it clean” attitude.  OK, so I admit that stamping the image off four times before stamping it onto the colored cardstock didn’t reveal a bold texture at all, but your brain knows something wonderful is there.

  • Bordered in White.  I love thin frames around my layers – you already know that.  Because the badge had a thin border of white after I cropped it with the Best Badges punch, I decided a white border would look nice around the Sweet Sugarplum and Island Indigo panels, too.  It’s crisp and bold and really helps pull your eye to the middle of the set where the super-sweet sentiment is.  Don’t you agree?
