A Spooky-Chic Halloween Wreath for FMS

I’ve never been a huge fan of Halloween – I don’t like to be scared so “spooky” doesn’t do it for me.  I am, though, a huge fan of cute things (like trick-or-treaters in fun costumes) and pretty things (is there anything more chic than black-and-white?).  With this week’s Freshly Made Sketches (a big circle is the focal point of the sketch), I created a gorgeous spooky Halloween wreath and surrounded it with black, gray and white.  This is the pretty side of Halloween.  Here’s my card:

  • Sketch Rules.  In online card challenges, we are encouraged to create a project that’s CASE’d from a layout.  When you CASE (Copy and Share Everything) a project, you have license to change it as much as you’d like – take an idea and make it your own. For my take on this Freshly Made Sketches challenge, I moved the objects around a bit and flipped the sketch on its side.  Still, all the parts are there, and the finished project is obviously inspired by this sketch.  The sketch gave me a great starting point, so I’m thrilled that I had the sketch to inspire me.
  • Wondrous Wreath Tip.  Back in 2014, I helped Mom to make a set of cards with the Wondrous Wreath stamp set and coordinating Wondrous Wreath Framelits (you can see her project here).  While creating with this wreath for the first time, Mom and I struggled to get the stamped image perfectly lined up with the two dies that crop the wreath.  I did a quick search and found a great tip from Patty Bennett about how to get the best results – cut the center, stamp the wreath, cut the outside.  It made all the difference in the world!  Here’s the stamp set:

And here’s the coordinating set of dies, which also pair with the Circle of Spring stamp set, also available in the Annual Catalog:

  • Spooky Chic.  Do these colors lean more toward “spooky” or “chic”?  I combined black, white and two shades of gray for this card.  I was worried that it would be too dark or that it would have no “pop,” but the Smoky Slate paper gives a great backdrop for the wreath.  Don’t you think?  If you like this combination of colors, too, feel free to save this:Stampin' Up! 1. WOW!! Brian, this wreath really is spooky, it could be hung on the door of The Addams Family, dark yet beautiful.
I love how you changed the FMS sketch just a bit to make it work for you, love it!!!

  2. Curious ??? How can spooky, creepy scary be happy ?? I am right there with you on not liking the scary part of Halloween !! But I do like the cutsie images .
Now, your card is perfect for those that like the spooky things . How can you go wrong with all of those dreary colors ?

  3. How clever is this card, the colors says it all.

  4. Love the color choices n your card today. Very urban and smart. Will remember this collection.

  6. Brilliant black wreath . . . you know how to work stamp sets year round!

  7. Super cooooool card!

  8. This is amazing. So simple, but evokes the Halloween mood perfectly.

  9. Well, alrighty then. A monochromatic black-and-white (plus some gray for good measure) Halloween card. Absolutely brilliant! I don’t think I’ll ever look at that wreath quite the same way again. At this time of year happy, spooky, creepy, and scary are all synonyms to me! Thanks for playing along with us at Freshly Made Sketches this week – and for getting the wheels churning in my mind for some fun Halloween goodness!

  10. Your Halloween card is totally elegant! Your colour choices are so classy as is that wreath – a great addition for a Halloween card. Thanks for joining us at FMS this week!
