Betsy’s Blossoms – a Masculine card

After a workshop this past weekend where we punched the Betsy’s Blossoms flower with the large scallop circle, I thought it would be really cool to “masculinize” the floral design by punching it in dark colors with the square punch or the scallop square punch.  I pictured navy’s and browns.

After doing a quick search online, I came across a beautiful card by Jill Franchett at Jill’s Ink.  Jill uses a different color palette and layout, but her work definitely inspired my final card. You can check out her card here.

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Use it in a different way.  You’ve heard this from me before, but I get such a thrill out of using stamps, shapes and punches in ways they were not intended to be used.  A flower is a flower, but I really love the idea of taking the “flower” out of this image and transforming it into a really cool pattern.
  • Stagger the punches for a cool effect.  Because my stamped image is not intended to be a flower, I made sure I didn’t punch the pattern in the same place on each stamped image.  I like the effect this has on the final design.

  5. Great color combo! I always love seeing stamps used in ways in which they were not orginally intended. Always looking for more masculine card ideas that aren’t the normal fishing, hunting, etc. VERY nice masculine card! I think I will have to case this one. 🙂

  8. Wonderful idea, Brian….and yes, most of us struggle with masculine cards…this would be great for my BIL who loves gardening!! Thank you for sharing your inspiration….and I love Jill’s card for a female version.

  9. And I thought scallops weren’t masculine! Thanks for changing my mind.

  10. Very cool, Brian! Love the way you took the very feminine stamp and turned it on its ear! I love the color combination and how you’ve grounded the card with the Night of Navy and Cajun Craze colors. Fantastic!

  11. This has such an ‘arty’ feel to it–such a creative use of the stamp AGAIN. I didn’t think you could beat the use of it as fireworks, but I think you have! –Terri
