Triple Time Stamping Tutorial

After I posted Pam’s Triple Time Stamped Convention Swap last week (you can see it here), I was asked by one of my blog readers to provide a step-by-step tutorial of this technique. What a fun challenge! This is just for you, Sonny!

Before I begin my step-by-step tutorial, here’s a card I created with this wonderful stamping technique:
20120908-171210.jpgI love how the images seamlessly spill over into the other layers in this pretty awesome technique. For this card, I built layers a standard (4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″) card front. To recreate this card, here’s what you need to get started:

  • Three pieces of white or vanilla cardstock cut into the following sizes:
    • 4″ x 5-1/4″
    • 4-1/4″ x 3″
    • 2″ x 3-1/4″
  • Card stock cut into the following sizes:
    • standard card base (5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″, scored at 4-1/4″)
    • 4-1/2″ x 3-1/4″
    • 3-1/2″ x 2-1/4″

Below I have displayed all the pieces for your viewing delight:

Using a 2-way glue pen, spread a small strip of glue in the center of two of the white pieces of paper. Did you know that 2-way glue is a temporary adhesive when you allow the glue to dry? Allow the glue to dry.

I am still using the 2-Way Glue Pen I bought in 2005 (in case you were overy-curious, wondering why mine doesn’t look like yours). Once the glue is dried on the card stock, stack the white card stock pieces on top of each other, centering each piece on top of the other:

Stamp images all over the white card stock. Make sure you allow the images to cross over the layers you created in the last step. For my image, I stamped the birthday sentiment first and then stamped the flowers around it.

WARNING: You are not going to like the way the stamped images look around the edges of the white card stock. Don’t worry! You are going to layer in the colored card stock pieces in the next step, and that’s going to cover your “bobbles.”20120908-171312.jpg

Begin to assemble the pieces as shown below. NOTE: before you glue down the white sheet on the card stock base, make sure it’s lined up in the direction you want. If you don’t, the sentiment will be upside down (probably unappealing to the recipient of your card – unless she is competing in a headstand competition on her birthday).20120908-171319.jpg

  1. I’m glad Sonny spoke up and asked for this tutorial, I’ve not been a fan of this technique, and thought I did not have the right stamp set for it. However! I do have the above Mixed Bunch stamp set so Sonny! I’m going to give it a try! Oh and Brian, thank you dear for a marvelous tutorial 🙂
PS thank goodness you warned me about the unsightly stamping on WW, I may have gotten frustrated all for nothing!

  2. Brian,
Great tutorial! I love that ONE brad you put on the “top” piece of your card. Thank you for showing us how easy this technique really is!

  3. I love the bright colors on your card. So clean and simple and beautiful!!

  4. Thank you Brian ! You are the most sweetest ! I knew you would hit on some things that could cause some of us “Right Brainers ” to give up . By the way have you ever considered changing y
our name to Brain ? Another plus is I have this stamp set .. I also want to try it with a fall theme..

  5. I want to see this technique done with Circle
Circus. Better yet, maybe I will try and show you!!

  6. Thank you SO much for doing this step by step! I know I asked you and you responded and told me, but seeing it makes much more sense to MY brain. This is an awesome card and when I come back from church today, I am going to try this. Allie, Circle Circus! YES! One of my favorite sets and Sonny, Fall leaves? Yes again! I can see a multitude of different designs now…. 🙂 Thanks again Brian!

  7. Thank you soooo much! I am new to the world of Stampin Up and see this technique on different websites but never a how to before. I can hardly wait to try this! I really like the fact that you included the measurements for each piece of card stock! I read your blog every day Brian – you are the BEST!

  8. Great tutorial, Brian! And I am most appreciative of the picture showing the funky edge stamping…that will ease my mind when I finally get around to doing this technique. I have a couple of stamp sets in mind… will send you a picture when I give it a go. Thanks!!! 🙂

  9. I do so enjoy your blog! Keep it coming.

  10. Great tutorial–thanks very much for showing it step-by-step for those of us ‘skeered’ to try this technique!. Now I know the only thing I have to fear is if my recipient does NOT want to do a headstand if I fail to position that bottom white layer correctly….

  11. Thanks so much for the tutorial, Brian! When I first saw the card, I absolutely loved it but decided I probably wouldn’t make it because I wasn’t sure how it was done. I’m glad someone else took the time to ask you for more detailed instructions. I can’t wait to try it now! BTW….I love your blog – your cards rock! Sandy

  12. Thanks Brian. I have wanted to know how to do this but didn’t know how to lign up the images. Always love your tutorials and suggestions. They are lots of help.

  14. Hi Brian! I have been so busy lately that I haven’t managed to find time to leave comments though I have visited you daily 🙂 I am still adjusting to my daughters departure to college and found it hard to craft much over the past week or two. Today I decided to make some altered composition notebooks (shared them on my blog).
The triple time stamping technique is by far my favorite. I used this technique in my workshop in august and ended up with over $500 in sales. For this area that was a great workshop. I fell in love with the vibrant colors in your card … you always rock the color combos and are still tops in my book! Thanks for sharing!

  15. I love this card. I made a triple mat card a few weeks ago, I liked how it turned out, but this one is so pretty. Loving the colors. I now have a new idea for this stamp set!!! Keep up the awesome work on your blog. I like to check out your blog everyday! I love the humor you add to all your info for us.

  16. Thank you for taking your time to explain and show us how to make a “Triple Time Card”.
I enjoy your blogs, instructions and comments. You really make stamping fun!

  18. Can’t tell you how thrilled I was to find this on Pinterest today…. I have been wanting to try this technique ever since I saw it but didn’t know how to go about it!! In fact I just asked my demonstrator this week if she could do a Christmas card at our next class with this so we could learn it but now this is perfect cause I can print it out and have it forever (since I can’t seem to remember sh_t in my old age!!)… Thanks so much Brian for your Blog!! I will be stopping by again for sure!!

  21. The Triple Time idea is great. Must be my lucky day cause I know that I have quite a few stamps that will work really well. Can’t wait to finally make cards with this cool technique!

I had all of the info except for the most important, the DIMENSIONS! So glad I found your website and tutorial. Thanks!!!!!

  22. Hi Brian, Just tried your measurements .. should the card size be 8.5 and not 8. its tough to cut an 8 inch in half to make it 4.25 x 4.25. I know this sounds like I’m being a smartass but I cut it by your measurements then realized. thought if I was wrong you could correct me or you could edit this for others.. Seriously, let me know. The card turned out great in the end so I truely thank you sooooo much

  23. sorry.. 4.25 x 5.5

  24. Love the look of this card and you made it so simple (even I can follow the directions) Thanks for sharing

I had looked everywhere to find out how to do this technique. I am attempting to make a card using horsey stamps for my granddaughter’s 6th birthday.

  28. Thank you! I was never going to try one of these cards even though I just loved the look. I always thought it was too hard. Thank you so much! I’m going to be busy the rest of the day now!

  29. thank you so much for your wonderful tutorial. this is so pretty and you make it so simple. Cant wait to make some.
