Today’s project is a card inspired by the PPA Color Challenge. They pick the colors – I make the card. While thousands of Fall-inspired ideas ran through my head, I decided to keep this card uber-simple and uber-clean. Here’s my card:
As you have probably already guessed (because you are smart, and you are actively participating in this conversation), the colors for the challenge were these beauties:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders:
Because today’s card is so simple and so basic, I have decided to share some of the most basic card-making pointers I offer new card-makers in my workshops and classes. Because you are a card-making rock star, you may have missed these tips as you progressed upward at such a fast pace. I would hate to think you might have missed some of these, so you can quietly file them away without acknowledging you didn’t know:
- Valley on the outside, hill on the inside. It’s counterintuitive, I know, but when folding a piece of scored card stock, the valley (the inwardly scored line) stays on the outside. That’s just the way it is, friends. I can’t change that. But memorize my little mnemonic, and you’ll never forget: VOTOHOTI. Now, how will you remember the mnemonic?
- Glue, then fold. When new card-makers are presented with a trimmed and scored piece of card stock, they almost always have a sudden urge to immediately fold the card stock. I highly suggest that you wait until the front of the card is finished to fold the base of the card. Why? It’s much easier to adhere the face of the card when the base is completely flat.
- When in doubt, throw it out. If your design is not working for you, take one of the elements out. Did that make it better? I snipped many leaves in preparation for this card, but something wasn’t working. I was in doubt, so I took them out. Now, I’m happy with this simple design.

It’s always hard to make men cards for me, I love decorating and a little bling so this card is perfect and just in time to make for my son in law. Thanks for the tips.

I am sort of new to your blog Brian. You know what I love the most about it? You ALWAYS have great tips (not to mention super “uber” great cards !) I’ve been card making for at least 3 years; and NO ONE has ever told me about adhering the layer on the base before I fold it. That was always one of the things that “got to me”. I have a hard time making it straight sometimes; and here I thought it was because my eyes were getting old (not me, just my eyes) and I wasn’t “seeing” it straight anymore. Thanks for a super wonderful card, and your wonderful tips and sense of humor! YOU ROCK ! (oh, and did I say I LOVE this card?) Very nice! 🙂

Wonderful card, Brian! Even though I apply layers and bling, I really do appreciate the simple cards (this is by no means plain!)….great job and I so agree with the other responses, it is a great masculine card as well as a Holiday/Fall card!

What is the background on this card? Is it corrugated paper?
This is a striped paper that was sold in 2012. It looks like it has texture, but it’s a smooth patterned paper.
