Sour Cream Container Tutorial

Most of the swaps I received at the Chattanooga Regionals in September were cards – makes sense because I also made cards to swap. I did, though,receive a couple of really great 3-D items in exchange for my dorky card. One of the 3-D items was a sour cream container by Kim Medlock. I had never seen this before and was immediately excited to figure out how to make this container and to share it with you. Strangely enough, the Sour Cream Container project was deomonstrated as a part of the formal presentation from Stampin’ Up! that day.  Seems to me that Kim was ahead of the trend.

Here are some sour cream containers I made, followed by step-by-step instruction for you :

I found instructions for this container online, but I changed things up a bit to better match Kim’s swap. Here’s how I made my container:

1. Trim a piece of Designer Series Paper to 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″ (I tried it with a piece of embossed card stock, too, but I think the thinner paper works best).  I rolled the paper into a tube before getting started – just a per-performance warmup for our little piece of DSP.

2. Add sticky strip to the inside pieces of the card stock.  It might not be clear from the below photo, but I positioned the paper with the longest sides on the top and bottom.  I added Sticky Strip to the entire left hand side of the paper, to the top (from the left side to about half way across the page) and to the bottom (about half of the bottom, centered along the bottom):

3.  Removed the Sticky Strip along the left side and the top side of the paper.

Quick tip for removing that pesky Sticky Strip film: Run your paper snips between the sticky part and the film. Once you have separated the two, trap the film between your finger and the scissors. Peal away, cheering as you go.

stampwithbrian.com.jpg4.  Roll the paper into a tube.  I lined up the edge of one side against the inside line of the Sticky Strip on the other side and then rolled piece over, adhering along the edge.

stampwithbrian.com.jpg5. Pinch the end of the tube with the removed Sticky Strip film, securing it tightly.  If you aren’t lined up exactly, you might need to trim a little off the edge of the container.

6. Add candy or some other gift (it’s probably NOT a good idea to fill your tube with sour cream – not only will that make a mess, but the neighborhood children probably won’t appreciate it).

7. Remove the sticky strip from the open end of the container.  Pinch the end shut ( perpindicular to the other way the other end is secured).

8. Decorate with ribbon or other embellishments.  I added sentiments from Googly Ghouls and Toxic Treats

I just love these sour cream containers and tend to make them right around Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas as they make an adorable treat at a place setting on the table decorated for the Holiday Theme. What nice hands you have Brian! 🙂 I wonder who takes the photo of you as we look at your right hand from the front? Bandit must be some special kitty!

    • Patti – too funny! Bandit charges WAY to much to do my photography. That’s my left hand, reaching over the table and guessing at a proper angle to take the picture. Sometimes I wish Bandit could help out!

  2. Oh, WOW!!!!! This is sooooo coooool!! I’ve seen this sour cream containers at hotel dining rooms and I always thought they were super cute. Brian, thanks for the direcctions, I’m going to give this a try. Hey, have you ever thougth of making a video tutorial?? I think it would be a riot to listen to you explain the project, you have a great sense of humor.

  3. These little doozies are perfect for a few M&Ms or Skittles….your directions are so detailed that maybe even I can do one ! And thank you for joining “The Can`t Get The Blankety-Blank Film Off Club” I usually skip using that pesky pink tape( which sticks great ) because It`s so hard to peel! Somebody said to try running your bone folder down it a little in the center…haven`t tried that yet nor have I tried the tip of my snips…. well I have a good excuse I am one of those Rock Stars that you mentioned a few blogs back ! Thanks for the suggestion not to put real sour cream in them !!!! You just never know .

  8. Love this idea for Halloween! I’ve made plenty of these as party favors. One extra you can add is to crimp each end once it is sealed with sticky tape. Thanks for sharing all your great ideas!!

  11. Love these sour cream containers. I like to crimp the ends too- and if you skip the sticky strip on one end, punch two holes, and use ribbon to keep it closed-your container is reusable – you don’t have to tear the poor thing open to get to the goodies! Love your blog-I always check it everyday first thing! You have wonderful ideas! Keep ’em coming!

  15. Okay my friend……This may be an older post….But I wanted to create some Easter carrots for a retreat I’m going to in April. For the life of me…..I couldn’t figure out how to create this SUPER EASY sour cream containers and came across this tutorial you posted back in 2012. LOVE IT.
    It all came together VERY QUICKLY once I viewed your step-by-step pics. THANKS SO MUCH for having this up on Pinterest. Going to make creating these carrots SO EASY.
