Festival of Prints Simple Greeting

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working on a really big project that involves a ton of card stock and 8 packs of the Festival of Prints Designer Series Paper Stack.  Once I had cut all the pieces I needed from the stack, I was left with 28.7 pounds of 3/4″ paper strips.  As you can probably guess, my mind immediately started racing about how I could use the leftover the strips of DSP.  I don’t want to let these strips go to waste.

Here’s a card I made with the strips:stampwithbrian.com - Festival of Prints scraps.jpg

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • Coordinate your patterns. This paper stack has a lot of really great prints, but they don’t all coordinate well with one another. THESE two filigree patterns, however, are brilliant together. They aren’t matching patterns, but they coordinate well.
  • Repeat a simple pattern for a simple appeal.  This card is visually appealing because it is based in Lucky Limeade and pops with accents of Cherry Cobbler.  I repeated this pattern in the sentiment on the front of the card – based it in Lucky Limeade and added some pops of Cherry Cobbler.  Sometimes it’s unintentional, bu it’s most effective when it’s designed that way.

If you can think of any great ways to use the paper strips, please send me a note.  I really don’t want these strips to go to waste – and I don’t want them to get trapped in my Bucket of Lost Dreams.

Thanks for stopping by my blog today!

  1. I love this! The colors and patterns coordinate so well, no one would ever know you were just trying to “use up some scraps”. Another success!

  2. You are off to a great start, Brian! Almost 29 pounds of leftover strips!?!?! Unbelievable!
Super job! Gotta run …. have a great day!

  3. I don’t know if I can handle it! Something about both the cherry and the green being a scroll.. if one was not a scroll but a plaid or a stripe-get where I’m going with this… that’s when they work. But I still love you Buddy! Scraps are great for a Quilt Card. Check them out!

  4. Patti is on my thought stream…Quilt cards …there are several blogs that feature them …I agree with you that some of the Festival of Prints designs don`t mesh but you picked two winners . I like this card a lot scrolls and all…later

  5. WOW Brian, I wonder what is that project you were working on that left you with all of those lb. of paper!! But this card is great, I noticed that you aligned the design on the green paper and you kind of alternate the design on the red one, this gives the papers a really pretty look next to each other. Thank you for a really cool idea to use left over paper.

  6. Yep, I like this one 🙂

  7. I really liked this and thought it popped! Great use of scraps. As always you did a GREAT job! :0)

  8. Great card (as always)! Could you do paper weaving with some of the strips? Could some of the strips be matched and taped together on the back to make a larger piece and then make a star burst?

  9. Love this! I have a shoe box full of similar strips leftover from wedding invitations/favor boxes that I’m trying to use up. Are your strips wide enough to use your 3/4″ circle punch? Or maybe word window? I thought quilt cards too – maybe if you search “quilt cards” on Pinterest you will be inspired? Have a great day!

  10. Love this…I have a pile of strips on my work table…thank you! By the way, you have a lot of early morning friends, Brian…I had to scroll for an hour to get to this comment box 🙂

  11. If you had that much left over, what in the world are you making? When is the reveal? Nice use of leftovers, I often struggle with will I ever use my bits and pieces, this is a great idea! Any hints on the monster project? Are you building a house?

  12. Brian – love this card…try some iris paper folding projects with your leftover strips. There are a LOT of patterns out there and several books about it if you are not familiar with the craft. The first stage is cutting paper into strips…gee, sounds like you’re ready to go:)

  13. have a class to make Xmas cards with scraps. I always like your ideas. Thanks for making us smile in the morning. Georgygirl

  14. I stopped in again to reread your statement in regard to how many packs of DSP (8) you were using …You are opening your own card shop aren`t you ? You have sold a ton of your Trip Card stacks . 28.7 pounds????…. Huge seasonal collages? Puzzle ..Puzzle ..Edna thinks you are building a house … you have me stumped… swaps at a convention…. Hmmmmm

  15. *LOVE, LOVE, LOVE* this card — Just a quick question — unless I didn’t see it — what are the dimensions of the strips. BTY: You have a great eye for color combos!!

    Cheers,

  16. I didn’t read all your replies, but here’s something I made recently: http://debbiesdesignsblog.blogspot.com/2012/10/wednesday-wacky-3d-pumpkin-goodie-dish.html
I found that 1/2″ strips of paper worked better IMO. Also, I had trouble adhering the paper to the votive holder but I found that Tombox glue for metal worked the best BUT I also cut a VERY narrow strip of paper and glued it along the upper inside edge once the other strips had dried. I have had no problems since trying that one extra narrow strip of paper. I hope you give this a try as I believe it can work for any occasion [Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc] depending on the paper you use. Enjoy!

  17. Classy and sophisticated. Love the simplicity.

  18. Well I see I’m out numbered and your card is not a fail but a hit. Humph! 🙂
But at least I know what the Monster Project is! (insert na na na na na here) wink wink!
    (he loves me!) <3

      • help! they’re tickling me Brian! They want to know you’re big secret! Where are YOU? Fess up, it’s not up to me to tell them! They’ll be so happy for us as I am! (40 more minutes and he’ll be out of work) maybe after the bluetooth phone call with Pammie Pam Pam he’ll jump on and say hello to us all!

      • no no, happy for YOU as I am, 🙂

  19. Loving all of the comments…I will exercise my patience and await the big reveal! Great card!

  20. New fan, new commenter here. You might enjoy the herringbone technique. Club Scrap has a technique video on their website, and there are plenty of pins about it.

  21. Hi Brian,
Love your blog! The card in the oct 2012 Stamping’ Success is a great way to use up paper strips and not worry too much about coordination. I blinged it up a bit by making the star with glimmer paper and alternating the strips with dimensionals. I also dry embossed the background with Northern Flurry embossing folder before building the tree with my strips. It turned out great and was super easy…I had used it as a make and take because it shows off several products while remaining simple. Good luck with your paper strips!
