PPA146 – A Classy Color Combination

I’ve been on such a Cherry Cobbler kick over the past several months that I was almost relieved to see that the PPA Color Challenge calls for Riding Hood Red. Poor little Riding Hood has been neglected in my craft room.  Don’t get me wrong – I love Cherry Cobbler. With December just around the corner, though, I won’t be putting The Cobbler on the sidelines. How would I get through the Holidays without it?

I really love the color combination presented with the current Pals Paper Arts Color Challenge: Riding Hood Red, Crumb Cake and Very Vanilla. So basic. So beautiful. With the excitment of a little boy on Christmas morning, I ran through all my Christmas stamp sets to find the perfect holiday card. Wouldn’t Scentsational Season be adorable? How about Ornament Keepsakes for a beautiful card? For some reason, though, I kept coming back to my Day of Gratitude set. That’s not Christmas!  I wasn’t sure why I kept coming returning to my Thanksgiving images, but I finally just had to embrace the fact that I would be using the set. Here’s what I came up with:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • Use it in a different way. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…use your stamps in new and interesting ways. All the cards I’ve seen with Day of Gratitude feature shades of brown, rust and yellow. Makes sense. It’s a Fall-themed set.  I’ve always wanted to turn this medallion into a beautiful, floral image. Today was my day.
  • Set it off.  I played around with this flower over and over to find the best way to center it on the card.  That’s when it occurred to me that it would be far more interested to trim the sides off the image so that the image floats in from the corner of the card.  I like the look.
  • Trim away.  Are you wondering how I managed to arrive at the look above?  Here’s how.  I stamped the Day of Gratitude Image in Riding Hood Red on Very Vanilla and trimmed just outside of the image.  I then stamped the image again (without reinking) to lightly create the image on another piece of Very Vanilla.  This time, I trimmed on the inside of the red border.  I flipped it over and adhered it to the inside of the original image.  I added punched and cropped images from Floral Frames Framelits, Bitty Banners Framelits and Boho Blossoms punch, and you’ve got a complete look.

Thank you, Riding Hood Red, for helping me to switch up my colors for a change.  I’m sorry you’ll be back in the file folder again tomorrow while Cherry Cobbler gets all the attention again.  I really enjoyed hanging out with you.

  1. Handsome! Love this Floral Framelit cropped in the upper corner! Good thing you explained this was a paper snipped Day of Gratitude Medallion because I assumed it was a framelit layer. Tisk tisk!

  2. I really like Day Of Gratitude..I don`t have it but, I really like the images….and look what you did with it . I love it when you discover another way to use your stamps. I also like Riding Hood Red a lot …it`s a softer red but, it seems the Cherry Cobbler always gets chosen Homecoming Queen. This color combo could be used for a number of occasions…well maybe not for the Easter Bunny.I like your layout ..it`s almost bordering on sophistication….but then you are a classy kinda dude!!!

Riding Hood Red … I loved the name from the beginning, but just recently added it to my cardstock collection. I kept forgetting about it. Yes, Cherry Cobbler won out at my house as well.
Such a crisp, clean design … there is nothing better than to take a stamp set that “is or appears” to be for a specific season or a specific “theme” and use it in a completely different way. Most of the time, I’ve categorized my stamp sets for the purposes of organization and, in my mind, that’s where they stay as I use them. Great job, Brian. Always thinking outside the creative box! Have a great Election Day!

  4. Absolutely ingenious Brian, I love the way you straight cut the image to make it float out of the corner. I never, ever would have thought of that. Just a beautiful card that could actually be used for any occassion as I see it.

  5. Love the corner placement. You never cease to inspire! Thank you.

  6. Classy is right! I love that you can take something and turn it into a totally new themed stamp. That is art, classy art. Inspiring! Your sampes always make me want to go create with my stamps. So in some strange way your work motivates others too. I love your blog.

  7. Did you cut the flower out by hand or use a framelits? Love the card, and I ordered the set, but when my demo called SU, they said it wouldn’t work with the framelits set.

    • I trimmed around the stamped image (both inside and out). The large Crumb Cake shape is with Framelits. It’s the same shape but much larger, so they work well together.

      • Brian…you must have a steady hand, because I would not be able to make it look so clean and crisp, the way I shake!! Absolutely very sophisticated card, dearie!! Love it!

  8. Sorry my message below was short—I kept getting interrupted….

  12. Fabulous design…love the colors you chose!! Beautiful card….thanks for sharing your tips and tricks…you are the best!

  13. CAS perfection! And I agree I like things a little better “off-kilter” than perfectly center……………….hmm what does that say about me 🙂

  14. Brian–I’m very curious how you cut out the medallion in day if gratitude. Is there a framelit for it, or did you hand cut it? Kathy
