PP122 Challenge: A “Flashing” Snowflake

I was so excited when I saw that the Paper Players had issued a “Clean & Simple: Gold or Silver” challenge this week. “Clean & Simple” is right up my alley, and the “Gold or Silver” part really excited me. My “to do” list has included “play around with sheet metal” for a couple of months, so this challenge was the push I needed to finally mark that item off my list. Here’s my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • Big Shot and Roof Flashing: BFF’s. I was a skeptic when I first heard about the Big Shot. Why would I need some big tool to cut things (when I own a pair a scissors – and, by the way, I only owned one punch at the time)? Pam Morris and Katy McGloin to the rescue! My friendly enablers brought their Big Shots over to my house, along with lots of cool materials that can be cropped, scored and shaped inside this table-top machine. One of those materials was roof flashing, which Katy had picked up at a home improvement store. That’s when I was sold, and it’s been downhill (rather, uphill) from there! It takes some careful bending and pulling to get all the pieces broken apart once the flashing has been run through the Big Shot, but what an effect when you’re done!
  • Clean and Simple? Not a lot going on with this card – that’s clean. The metal technique is slightly difficult – can it still qualify as simple? Of course! In my [professional] opinion, both phrases refer to the aesthetic of the finished product. While there are layers of card stock and a pretty nifty snowflake involved, this card is still clean and simple. End of discussion.
  • Layering. Pay attention to your layering to maximize the end effect. Take a quick look at the stamped snowflake in the center of the metal snowflake. I wanted that Whisper White card stock to have a border, so I punched a Midnight Muse circle to wrap around it. Then, I needed another Whisper White circle so that the Midnight Muse circle would not blend in with the background paper. Instead of stacking all of that on top of one another (boring!), I simply put the largest circle behind the snowflake. Made all the difference in the world.
