The Best Love Story & PPA150 Color Challenge

Pals Paper Arts received a facelift this week – OK, maybe it was a nip there and a tuck here, but she seems to have a whole new attitude.  The site has been updated with a new look and some upcoming changes that are sure to please.

It’s time to start thinking about Valentine’s Day!  For the first PPA challenge of the year, a color challenge, I designed this card:www.stampwithbrian.com - The Best Love Story

Before I tell you, can you guess which colors are the inspiration for this challenge?  Oh!  You are good!  You are reeeeeaaaal good!  You got all three right, and I don’t know how you do it!

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  •  Where do you want your focus?  Something’s got to shine in each card.  Seems like the natural choice here, but I wanted my Melon Mambo hearts to be the stand-out in this crowd.  Basic Black and Basic Gray are only at the party to make Melon Mambo shine, but don’t tell them that (I don’t like to hurt anyone’s feelings).
  • That fresh, layered look.  This card is anchored by a bold, gray stripe down the center of this card.  Instead of just cropping the hearts and layering them on top of the gray banner, I cropped the negative heart (in the gray stripe) with my Hearts Collection Framelits and cropped the Melon Mambo hearts with a size smaller from the same framelits. The white hearts, layered on top of the pink hearts, are punched with the Small Heart punch. 20130104-214904.jpg
  • Optical illusion.  I love the way the negative heart creates a fluidity with the white card stock.  This wasn’t part of my plan, but if you stare at the full card, your eyes will complete other side of the heart.  It’s not there, but if you stare long enough, you’ll see a little white heart, a larger pink heart and then a larger white heart.  Kinda cool, huh?

Stamp sets:  One in a Million  Papers:  Basic Black, Basic Gray, Melon Mambo, Whisper White  Inks:  Melon Mambo  Accessories:  Hearts Collection Framelits, Small Heart punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals

  1. Love this! The cut out layering is brilliant! totally pinning this one!

  2. Oh Brian, this is lovely!!!!! You really nailed this one for Valentine’s Day. I was trying to guess the colors but I could only guess the Basic Black and the Basic Gray, the pink one I thought was Regal Rose. In any case, this card is a winner.

  3. Oh my word you are so talented!

  4. AMAZING! Your talent never ceases to inspire.

  5. This is so clever !!!! The whole card is a study in how sharp you are with design. I really like the negative use… I play with the negatives a lot because I think it`s a waste to discard them….but look at what you did …this is a Saturday Sensational …. Who would have thought to use that on an angle? If I did this I would hesitate sending it to anyone because I wouldn`t want them to think I ran out of paper….tee hee

  6. I love this! I am partial to hearts and I love the color combo. Awesome creation!!!!

  7. Addendum ….I realize that you purposely used the negative approach to this masterpiece and didn`t just lean down and grab something out of the wastepaper can. …. You are so smart…you make us proud …can`t wait to see your creation for tomorrow.

  8. So talented! Beautiful card! Should be in a museum.

  9. Stunned! Over. The. Top. This is a drop dead gorgeous card without having to go all vintage and everything! *swoon*

  10. Such a wonderful card. Simple yet beautiful.

  11. Wow. Wow.This is so much better than a stripe down the center with two hearts. It looks great. I am impressed.

  12. Love the use of the negative image! I am sure this will be a PPA winner, hands down. It is one of the most lovely cards I’ve seen. Rarely can you make that negative image play so smooth and you nailed it! Again!

  13. Brian – I don’t know how the heck you came up with that negative design but I absolutely LOVE it. You are amazing. I would never have thought of that in a gazillion years! And every piece on that card is placed perfectly. That’s a real “WOW” card if ever there was one!

  14. STUNNING! I like to use negatives also and I think people overlook them. This is a brilliant example of how to use them. This is going on my all time favorite list of cards. Send some your ‘magical creative mojo’ my way.
