The Fine Print

First Edition Specialty Designer Series Paper offers an incredible sampling of newspaper and book prints. These designs are a perfect way to accent almost any style of card or project. With a closer look, though, you may be surprised at what you find in the words on the page. I gasped at some, giggled at others.

Here’s a quick look at two of my surprises from the past year:

Lovely As a Tree card and Cox Enterprises:

As I planned my first Stamp-a-Stack event last year, I reached for First Edition as the background for this general purpose thank you card:www.stampwithbrian.com - Lovely as a Tree

As I was waking through the steps of the card assembly with the attendees at the workshop, I noticed – right there in the middle of the paper – the name of the company I work for. Cox Enterprises! I’ve been there 11-1/2 years. How cool is that! Cox has been in the Newspaper business (and now cable, tv, radio, car auctions…) for 115 years, so I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised. Just funny to see both worlds collide:20121123-212856.jpg

My Reworked Sympathy:

In August, I reached out to you to help me re-design a Baja Breeze sympathy card (as it was redesigned, it transformed into a “friends” card). Here’s the re-designed card:www.stampwithbrian.com - Baja Breeze Sympathy

But it didn’t take you long to point out that the words “urinary tract infection” were front and center on my design – and my ribbon seemed to be pointing you directly at it. Do you see it? Guess I should have read the entire page before showcasing it. 🙂  www.stampwithbrian.com - Baja Breeze sympathy card

  1. How funny! 😀

  2. Ha ha! That’s a good laugh!

  3. So stinking funny!! On the first card, which is lovely, I would never have guessed that you worked for that company unless you mentioned it but, on the second card, I really didn’t noticed this words until today. Good laugh indeed.

  4. I thought the second card was at first a sympathy card and in the background print you were giving the recepient planting instructions which could have been the ultimate cruelty joke . Or maybe that`s one that we aren`t supposed to ever mention again . I do like both of these cards though. I like using newsprint and book text for cards every now and then but, I have become more aware of what is actually printed on it after you brought that to our attention . Wouldn`t this be a funny topic to imagine “What I would not want the print to say if I sent it to—–(fill in the blank ) Hey Brian, great idea for a comedy routine….George Carlin would have loved this comedy material or Letterman`s Top Ten ….now I will be thinking about this all day …. later

  5. Funny, I’ve never actually read the words on the paper (and I just used this DSP this week on my nephews birthday card), perhaps I should.

How neat that your company’s name is on there!

Have a great weekend and Happy Stampin’!

  6. Wow. Twilight zone. A matching T-shirt and stamp, plus your company’s name in DSP. What’s next? Hadn’t noticed the “UTF” before, but I’m going to start carefully reading the print DSP before cutting pieces for a card!

  7. I love that DSP and I need to pay closer attention to the words, beautiful cards today!

  8. How neat to find your company name on the paper! I went to a stamp retreat this fall where we punched several images out of a book to layer them. I made sure to read the words on the top image because I remembered your post from August. The book used was “What to Expect When You’re Expecting”. You can imagine the words that were on the punched images. 🙂

  9. Brian, I do like the look of newspaper as background paper. It is pretty funny about the card with the urinary tract infection verbiage 🙂 And interesting about the reference to Cox Enterprises on the other one. Both your designs work perfectly with that DSP. I think it is to my thinking that newsprint kind of goes hand-in-hand with distressing. Just my thinking. I shy away from that.
Hope you are having a great time at Leadership in Orlando, Brian. I saw a picture posted on another blog of a hotel there with the palm trees wrapped in lights. Looked so inviting! We actually had some rain here in MN, but it’s going down to low single digits on the weekend.

  10. What a funny coincidence! On both cards, at that! Bwahaha! Love our funny mornings…great way to start the day! These cards are gorgeous! ;D
    Have fun in Florida!
    Hugs, Sharon

  11. It’s the start to a Funny Friday with Brian! I guess I’d better start reading the ‘fine print’ when using this DSP! LOL! Love the cards!

  12. That is a riot!

  13. That’s hilarious! I love that paper and especially that there are 24 sheets in the package…guess it’s good that I got a pair of little readers this winter, hee hee!

  14. Brian — I really like your cards – the DSP adds a nice touch. Who would have guessed the name of the company you work for would be in the print. I guess you never know what you might find in the fine print – LOL. Enjoy your Friday.

  15. Thanks for making us aware of this so we can be careful of what we send…lol!

  16. Great funny post as always. First, The bicycle stamp tee shirt and now your company on DSP! A clear confirmation of your destiny as a SU demo and blogger. I’m a big fan of your blog. Thanks for making me smile and laugh each day. Enjoy leadership conference – maybe you will meet up with my demo and all around Doctor of Stampology, Pam Joel from NJ.

  17. I have to say – you leave me “cracked up” all the time! This completely sounds like an every day type of event in my insane household. I hope you are enjoying leadership and wish I was there. Wish my aunt (Ann Schach) a happy hello from me! Leslie Swearinger from IL

  18. You know what, Brian? That is EXACTLY why I have never ever liked the First Edition DSP. I’m the type of person who wants to see what it says, so I always figured that if I made a card out of that for someone, they’re going to spend all of their time trying to figure out what the small print says instead of being grateful and appreciative to ME. lol So that paper has never been on my wish list, nor will it ever be. Pretty cards though. Glad you had such a great time at Leadership.

  19. Too funny. I have an old murder mystery that dropped in the bath so I use pages for cards…but it is a murder mystery and I always seem to get pages with blood or body parts described…so I bought this Su! Paper to use instead. I love your cards…especially the second one. That may just be the prettiest card I have seen!,
