I Pinned It, Let’s Do It! & PPA152 Color Challenge

Welcome to another “episode” of I Pinned It, Let’s Do It, where I feature my take on a cool project I pinned on Pinterest.  It’s my way of actually DOING something with those pinned items. I’m also a regular in The Pals Paper Arts challenges, so today I am giving you a mix’em up to give you two challenges in one. Let’s start with the card and follow with the details:stampwithbrian.com - PPA152

The color challenge (if you can’t figure it out from the image above) is to create a card with Primrose Petals, Pool Party and Real Red. The first thing I thought of (and I’m sure we’ll see a lot of it in this color challenge) is More Amore Designer Series Paper. These are the principal colors featured in the paper, so what a great starting point!

You might not be able to tell from the photograph of today’s card, but I’ve actually braided the background paper (I used two 1/2″ strips of More Amore and two 1/2″ strips of Very Vanilla for each of the three braided panels in the card. I then alternated the panels and snipped them (lots of careful measuring there) to make a chevron with the braided papers. Here’s a link to the tutorial that brilliantly shows how to braid paper – who’da thunk it?20130206-205305.jpg

Because the background paper is so “busy” and because I wanted to ensure that the chevron background would be the focust of the card, I created a simple and relatively bold sentiment.  To really shake up the card world, I placed the sentiment in the bottom, left corner of the card.  Way to really stir up a controversy, Brian!

Stamp sets: Ciao, Baby Papers: Primrose Petals, Very Vanilla, Pool Party, More Amore Inks: Primrose Petals Accessories: Full Heart punch, Petite Curly punch

  1. No kidding, braiding! I’m all for chevron, it never goes outta style!

  2. Super cool card!! Thanks for sharing. This is a great project to play with on what is supposed to be a stormy day here in the northeast.

  3. WOW!! Great card, Brian. Thanks for the link to the tutorial, it will be fun to try mixing the colors and designs of paper. Kim, you guys are going to get hit real bad, this storm just missed us here in NW Indiana, right now it’s just cold and very windy so, have fun with this project, if you have little kids at home due to this storm, put them to braid paper, that might keep them entertained for hours.

  4. This is really a show stopper…wow…how unusual !! How many people would wake up one morning and say ” Gee I feel like braiding paper this morning ” I think I like it !!

  5. Hi Durkin, I received your lovely Valentine `s Day card yestrday afternoon . It is so pretty !! I really like how you added the Baja Breeze and Rose red together for a different look. . And you added some shimmer to the card in a very sophisticated way … I just love this card…and such a pretty sentiment …wish I had gotten it ! Thank you for a visual delight !!!!

  6. You’re right, who’d a thunk it? But it sure works here on your card. It adds a lot of texture and interest, and I love the sentiment. I’m glad to see somebody using those pins, too!

  7. Winner, winner chicken dinner! Braiding………..love it! Very detailed indeed. I bet this technique could be a real stress reliver, once you mastered it course.

  8. Really beautiful braiding, Brian! I never thought of that and I like it! A little time consuming, but so worth the end result…stunning!
Can’t wait to receive my Valentine in the mail…looking forward to it!
    Hugs!

  9. Hi Brian : I looked at this post and immediately went to my craft room and cut red and white strips of paper to braid for a valentine theme – I will have to be a little more brave to try it with pattern paper. Thanks for sharing this fun technique – I would not have thought of braiding paper on my own !!

  10. This comment is for Traci Davis, from Clear Water, FL. I received you lovely card yesterday and I absolutely LOVE IT!!!!! LOVE the look of glass of this little jar filled with those sparkling hearts!!!!! This stamp stet and matching dies were overlooked for a while, I’ve never seen them up close and personal but, after seeing your card I appreciate their wonderful details and possibilities so, I will have to add them to my wish list and get them before they are gone.
Thank you so very much for this sweet Valentine!!

  11. I have tons of paper strips from cutting cardstock to size but never, ever thought of braiding it – that is until now. We here in Maine are getting slammed and I’m sure we will lose power by late afternoon if not before so – I’ll get out a bunch of strips and set them in the kitchen near the camp lighting and, when the lights go out, I’ll be braiding away. LOL

  12. Wow — I am impressed. Really wonderful card and the braided paper is a perfect background for your heart. I like the style of your cards and thanks for sharing the braid technique too.

  13. Beautiful! Funny though, I’ve been a scrapper for 18+ years and we’ve been braiding for a long time as borders on our scrapbook pages, never thought about doing it on my cards.

On another note, I got my beautiful Valentine Cards in the mail today! NANCY G – the tree with the hearts hanging on it was so cute!!! I am going to CASE that this week for a few more cards I need to make!!! LESLIE G – the card you made with the scallop envelope and the hearts coming out…WOW I love it!! I have never worked with the chunky glitter but I am going to have to get some really makes that heart stand out!! Love the use of the glimmer paper too!! Thanks so much ladies for making such Wonderful cards to brighten my day and BIG Thanks to Brian for hosting the swap and sending them to me!!!!

  14. Amazing card! Think we all have strips hanging around, know I do! Thank you for sharing…gonna give this a try!

  15. Love, love, love. Braid paper, who woulda thunk it. Last year I did a heart woven from strips for grandson’s card (can’t be too girly for a 10 year old). But braiding! Wow!

  16. Absolutely fabulous, Brian! What a great technique!

  17. omg Brian , love it !! BEAUITIFUL work , !!
