Happy Birthday, Sophie!: a Paper Player Color Challenge

Sophie is my favorite niece, and she’s celebrating another birthday!  OK, so Sophie is my only niece, but I feel certain that she’d still be my favorite niece even if there were others.  Sophie’s birthday is tomorrow.  Her cupcake-themed birthday party was yesterday.  I am sharing the card I made for her today.  Since today is Sunday, you’re in for a treat – a double feature.  You’re not only going to experience Sophie’s birthday card, but you’re also going to see my Paper Players PP132 Color Challenge inspiration card:  stampwithbrian.com - Happy Birthday, Sophie!

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • Colorful Polka Dots.  The color challenge gave me the perfect foundation for Sophie’s cupcake birthday card.  I started with a page of Patio Party Designer Series Paper that features large white polka dots on a Summer Starfruit background.  Perfect for a cutesy birthday card!  But I played around with it some more and found that the circle punch from the Itty Bitty Shapes punch pack yields circles that fit beautifully inside the white dots.  Adding the three colors in a diagonal line, I transformed this polka dot paper from cute to adorable.

  • Create a color barrier.  I love Summer Starfruit, and I love Primrose Petals.  They complement each other very well, but there’s something offputting (in my humble opinion) about slapping them up against each other.  To separate them a bit I added a thin border of Whisper White between the Primrose Petals base and the Summer Starfruit card front.  The polka dots are also separated by a thin piece of white.  Maybe I’m just making an excuse, but I think the intricate design of the paper and the texture of the ribbon allow these two colors to work side-by-side on the banner.
  • To snip or not to snip.  To ensure the eventual bold pop of color on my cupcake, I stamped the cupcake on Whisper White, Primrose Petals and Summer Starfruit.  I then snipped the images on the colored card stock and glued them onto the Whisper White piece.  This also adds a dimension and texture that would be lost had I just colored in the cupcake.
