Babies, and Bow and Buttons. Oh, my!
It’s Sunday, and that means it’s time for a design challenge from The Paper Players. This week’s challenge, PP133, will make your brain go numb – a Clean and Simple (CAS) baby project featuring buttons and bows. I’m a CAS kinda’ guy so I’m not afraid of either a CAS project or a baby theme. The obvious challenge here is to incorporate bows and buttons into a CAS design. I was overwhelmed by the thought of dramatic, oversized bows and big, fancy buttons. Why all the drama, Brian?!? I took a step back, and told myself, “You can do this.”
With two layers of ribbon, a bow and three buttons, I think this card is uber-clean. Here’s my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:
- Try New Colors. My instinct is to reach for So Saffron, a lighter and more muted yellow, for a baby card, but Daffodil Delight was available in this Polka Dot Parade Designer Series Paper – and I really wanted to use this paper (he says, stomping his feet and holding his breath in a terrible temper tantrum). In the end, I’m glad for this. I really like this bright color, and it looks wonderful with the subtle Marina Mist. AND the ducky is so much cuter!
- Layering. There are lots and lots of layers on this clean and simple card. I matched up the Marina Mist pattern from the 2-1/2″ Circle punch with the pattern on the Daffodil Delight paper. I then layered the stitched grosgrain ribbon on top of the dotted scallop ribbon (note that the grosgrain ribbon completely covers the dots on the scallop ribbon – keeping the dots from being “too much” here). Above the ribbons, I layered a scallop circle and two circles and a snipped ducky.
Stamp sets: A Fitting Occasion, Every Little Bit Papers: Polka Dot Parade Designer Series Paper, Daffodil Delight, Marina Mist, Whisper White Inks: Marina Mist, Basic Black Accessories: 1/4″ Stitched Grosgrain Ribbon, 1/2″ Scallop Dots Ribbon, 2-1/2″ Circle punch, 1-3/4″ Scallop Circle punch, 1-1/4″ Circle punch, 1″ Circle punch, Bitty Buttons, Stampin’ Dimensionals

Oh my is right! It still looks CAS while you’ve layered this card silly! And ribbon! Two layers! You must have been out of your skin, looks fabulous!
Dare I say “precious”, Brian? You are so right, Daffodil Delight was the best choice.
So Saffron isn’t really a baby yellow in my opinion. I’d rather use it on a sympathy card. The Marina Mist is a great pairing with the DD for this baby card. The layering of the two ribbons knocks it out if the park! (I really need to remember to do that more often.) Heart buttons in clear were the perfect addition … these buttons add just the right touch but don’t distract from the focal point. Good job, indeed, Brian.
Oops! I meant detract! Not enough coffee this AM for me, either!
Such a sweet card and just love the color combo You must be psychic Brian, I need a baby card now! Off to CASE, thanks so much for sharing this one.
This is one of those….”Awwwwww. how cute ” cards…. It is so so sweet …..Love the color combo . I agree that So Saffron would not have looked as babyish . Also like the ribbon detail . I thought I was the only person that did the double ribbon thing ….( yeah right) This baby duck makes me think of Easter ….and Easter makes me think of cards ….So here goes …are we gonna have an Easter card swap ? I`m thinking Easter colors now …
Very adorable card! Matching the Marina Mist/Daffodil Delight DSP patterns is such a subtle, but VERY effective choice.
Oh Brian, this is so beautiful!! Yellow is a very neutral color for a baby card, specially if you don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy. The ribbon detail is fabulous, any mom to be would love this card.
And, like Sonny, my pal, my swap buddy, I will also ask…..Are we going to have a Spring/Easter card swap?? Ohhh!! the possibilities…..
I love that you mtached up the circle patterns on your circle and dsp! So easy to just let that go…
*matched. I should not type first thing in the morning. I had to respell the word circle (including this one) every time I typed it. Coffee, please…..
O.K. Brian – again I’m a day late and a dollar short. Last week I was racking my brain to come up with a baby card I needed and fell back on the old light green and yellow color combo and wasn’t happy at all with the card. Now out you come with this “knock your socks off” beauty. I’m going to print this baby out and have it for future reference. LOL It is a fantastic baby card. Love it.
Once again you have a “WOW” card! Cute! Cute!! Cute!!! I’ll have to pin this one for sure!! 🙂
Yellow and blue is a favorite color combo of mine, so you had me right there! The little ducky is adorable but I just LOVE the two-ribbon trim!!! The heart buttons finish it off so nicely!
Stinkin Cute! I love this card! Thanks for sharing!
This is just ducky!
Hey Linda…I couldn`t have said it any better myself ! Double tee hee !!
Wowza…just when I needed a baby card! My daughter is due this week and this would be perfect! Thanks so much for sharing this absolutely stunning card, Brian!
You did such a nice job on this card, Brian. You make me WANT to use those colors, and they are some of my seldom-used ones. I can’t seem to get the balance quite right when I do. Thanks for the early morning inspiration with this adorable card.
Brian, this is just so very sweet! Love it! And I saw those DSP patterns lined up so precisely…nice touch! I love the ribbons layered like they are. Adorable!! Bravo!
Such a sweet card for a Little One. The buttons add just the perfect charm.
Not only could you, but you really did a fabulous job on this card and you rocked the challenge! TFS!
LOVE this card!!! Matching the circles and layering the ribbon made it extraordinary. The buttons made it adorable. The duck made it cute. Put it all together and you have an awesome card that any mother or grandmother would be thrilled to receive. TFS
Brian, … your designs take my breath away ! Matching those circles and double layering the ribbon is such a great idea. The duck is adorable of course, and I can see this card in a “card stack gift”; and you can do it in pink and something for a girl too. Thanks for sharing it. Great job!
After reading your post, I envisioned you running in fear from huge 1980’s-sized hair bows (a la Madonna)…Brian, you crack me up! This is a fantastic baby card and I love how you matched the patterns up perfectly. Love the color combo, too. Awesome, as always! 🙂
Very cute, Brian! Love the adorable little duck image and your color combo is just perfect.
