I received Oh, Hello! as a gift during Stampin’ Up! Leadership in January. While I have been playing with the stamp set, I’ve not yet used the oval with the tiny chevron print. I’ve played around with it, but I haven’t arrived at a final project. Guess what! Today I did. Here’s my card:
Tips, Tricks and Reminders
- From Vintage to Modern. While most samples I have seen (including those in the catalog) use this image in a soft, vintage-like manner, I envision the oval as a bold and electric image. I stamped it in several different colors before deciding it lives in black. Stamped in Jet Black StazOn, this chevron pattern really pops! It pops again with some Stampin’ Dimensionals. I paired the Black with Melon Mambo to really “modern” it up and then softened it up a bit with flowers from Secret Garden and a scripty sentiment from Apothecary Art.
- Crop it Close. Instead of cropping this oval with the framelit that is one size larger than the image (leaving a white trim around the chevron pattern), I trimmed it with the oval framelit that fits just inside the shape. I matted that image on a Basic Black oval. I like that the pattern ends at the edge of the paper.
- Keep It Balanced. “Balance” doesn’t equate to “perfect symmetry.” As you can see from the photo above, the oval is neither centered vertically nor horizontally on the card front. The sentiment is stamped in the bottom, right corner, and the flowers pop out on the top, left side of the oval. All this – and yet the images seem to balance inside the constraints of the card front. The black colors are dark and heavy, while the Melon Mambo elements are light and airy. I constructed the oval with offset flowers and then played around with it to determine the right placement. Turns out the flowers are heavier than the sentiment, so I needed to center them a bit more than the sentiment.

My Paper Pumpkin. I’ve been so pumped about the vendor fair this weekend when it hit me – I haven’t really pushed the Paper Pumpkin with the people who visit with me each and every day. I’ve shared about it. I’ve talked about it. And I really, really want you to give it a try. In March, Stampin’ Up!’s Paper Pumpkin kits start mailing out, and I want you to be on the list. There’s no commitment – try it for a month or two. If you aren’t happy, then drop out of the program. I like both of the project kits I’ve seen (the Try Me kit and the first kit), and I’m sure they’ll ramp it up even for the ones after that. Won’t you please sign up at www.mypaperpumpkin.com to give it a try (you can select me as your demonstrator – Brian King, zip 30341). It’s best if you sign up using Google Chrome or Firefox. Please email me if you encounter any problems.
Thanks for visiting my blog today.
Brian
Love this card. See you tomorrow at the vendor fair.
Love the bold card and use of Black with Melon Mambo!
Well, I must say I like your choice of using black for this chevron stamp. And Melon Mambo is one of my favorites …. I like this card and how you mixed soft and bold together. It made me wonder how using Daffodil Delight would look with the black also .. On another note …nobody but, nobody is showing any examples of the Paper Pumpkin. Is it because they want people to have the fun of not knowing what is in the package ?? It`s a fun idea and I love getting packages in the mail but, I wish somebody would kinda give us a hint as what to expect !!
I’ll have something for you tomorrow, Sonny. Promise!
Sonny,
A lot of Stampin’ Up! demonstrators I visits have had videos of it. Try YouTube. 🙂
WOW! I just love how those colors pop out at you. It really screams HAPPY! Thanks for sharing.
Ooooooohhhhhhh that is gorgeous and I must shamelessly try that myself. Love seeing that chevron in black, and love how you cut it smaller to eliminate the white edge. The melon mambo flowers add another wow. Beautiful! Good luck at your vendor show. Wish I lived close enough to visit!
Love the Melon Mambo, it’s such a pretty sade of pink. I really like this combination of colors, those flowers really pop out and the chevron stamped in black is the perfect background. Good luck tomorrow at the vendors fair. I will say it again…..I wish I could go.
This is a very “hot-cha-cha” kind of card! Love it!
PS–looks like your paper pumpkin link is incorrect. You might check that.
Thanks for the heads-up, Richard! I noticed my horrible spelling of pumpkin last night and changed it on the post (but not in the link). Tricky technology! 🙂
Absolutely stunning card, Brian! I love the layout and colors, too! Good luck at the fair…so wish I was there…that I could float through the air…so that we could share! {poor try at a poem…LOL}.
Hugs!

Hi Brian, I have been visiting for awhile, but hiding. Love the blog and your cards! Thanks for sharing.
Love this car Brian and isn’t it cool that guys are getting into stamping! Wish I lived close enough to be at the vendor’s fair. Hopefully you will have some help as those fairs get crazy busy sometimes. Remember, we want a full report and some photos as well. Don’t let your fan club down! LOL
Your pretty card makes me feel happy! You can mix black with most any color…and Mellon Mambo is a fabulous choice! I really like that you cut the chevron oval smaller with no border and backed it with black. Very edgy design…I like it! TGIF and best of luck this weekend!
You are really opening my eyes to different ways to position the elements in your “focal image”.
Offsetting the flowers is really striking – especially with your chevron-stamped background!
I don’t know how you come up with such a great card each day, Brian! I guess it is just all that talent in your crafty hands and brain 😉
Have a very success day tomorrow! Sure wish I could drop by as well! or help!
Thank you for showing a different way to use the images in this set. I have been very hesitant about buying it, but love that chevron image. Seeing your project certainly helps me look outside of the box. TFS!
Beautiful! Crisp and simple. My kind of card!
