An All-Purpose Lattice Design

Sometimes we need a card that’s not designed for a particular event (but can be easily used for any reason).  As master cardmakers, we should definitely keep a few of these cards on-hand so that we can grab them when a need arises.  I love playing with card sizes, so I’ve designed a 4″ x 4″ card that I think will be perfect for either a man or a woman, either a birthday or a congratulations and either a wedding or a funeral.  I’ve not added a sentiment here – that can be added at last minute, if necessary:stampwithbrian.com - All-Purpose Lattice Card

Of course, you’ll also need an envelope.  For a 4″ x 4″ card, a 6-1/2″ x 6-1/2″ piece of DSP can be scored at 3″ (all the way around) with the Diagonal Scoring Plate.stampwithbrian.com - All-Purpose Lattice Card

As I was playing around with a bunch of shapes and sizes, I was excited to see that the lattice cutout fits nicely inside the Window Frames Framelits – it’s like they were made for each other.  I couldn’t resist making that fit the center of this card.

  • The Bravo Burgundy base of this card is 4″ x 8″ and scored at 4″.
  • The Very Vanilla front is 3-3/4″ x 3-3/4″.
  • I cropped the Bravo Burgundy Window Frames Framelit twice – once with the smaller size and then again with the larger.  I know, I know.  I COULD have just cut another piece of Very Vanilla to layer inside the Bravo Burgundy – but I didn’t.  If I had to make several of this card, then I would take this easier approach.
  • I cropped the lattice from the woodgrain piece of Natural Composition Specialty Designer Series Paper.  This paper is already embossed to add a wonderful texture to this card.
  • I traced the cutouts (the little pieces that pop out of the center) on Bravo Burgundy card stock and trimmed them just a bit larger than their actual size.
  • Put them together, and what have you got?  Bibbity bobbity boo!  And a beautiful all-purpose card!

  1. Oh my goodness Brian, this is brilliant!! How amazing that you found this combintion of paper cut outs that indeed, fit so perfectly one inside the other. I love that Lattice die, it’s so pretty and what you did with it today is beyond fabulous. Thank you for always sharing your amazing ideas.

    • OOOPS!! I forgot to comment on the Photopolymer stamps, I think this will be an awesome new addition to the SU line of stamps.

  4. Okay, Brian…my jaw dropped on this one…WOW! I love the lattice die and I love the framelits, but never thought to put them on the same card in this way. LOVE IT! You are a genius, even at the end of the week 🙂 Thanks for sharing this…will case for sure. Ordering my photopolymer set today, woohoo!

  5. Great find, Brian! I love it!

  6. I like this card ! You made the Lattice Die look non gender …I like this die a lot but, just don`t have it …guess I better get it before SU retires it . Is it hard to cut out …you know what I mean …does it come away a clean cut or do you have to do a lot of poking out holes !! I wondered because I don`t think I have seen it featured much in card designs . Have I mentioned that you come up with the best ideas !!

    • Thanks, Sonny! Here’s my experience with Big Shot crops – each Big Shot has its own “intensity” when it comes to cropping, and you have to figure out that level. I have to add a piece of card stock on top of the cutting pads to add that additional pressure to get a clean cut. Don’t worry – I use one piece over and over and over. 🙂 As long as you’ve found the right amount of pressure, the cuts are clean as can be.

  7. Very elegant combo Brian! How did you ever discover how lovely this would be?

  8. What an incredible discovery! You are just the best!!

  9. Fabulous card Brian! You are so amazing to share your cards with us, even details and dimensions. Scientists should ask to study your brain (they would be amazed)! You are a genius. I go to your blog first thing each morning to see amazing, brilliant, and entertaining posts. I love you and hope you continue sharing your brain Brian.

  10. Thank you for the answer …Don`t you just love the fact that everybody`s Big Shot has it`s own personality !! Guess Lattice will go on my ” To Get ” list … I have been wondering about that DSP also …I“m just not a big ” brown ” fan…that`s cause I`m so feminine … giggle giggle …

    • Sonny – I have to warn you about one thing…..the lattice die is absolutely adicting. I bought it when it first came out and it’s the first die I go to when I want something elegant. You are going to LOVE it!

  11. Very clever and I love the end result! Bravo Brian!!! I guess reading that you used Bravo Burgundy made me think of saying “Bravo”! Plus I love how that sounds! Everyone needs to say out loud, “Bravo Brian!” 🙂

  12. Bravo Brian !!!

    • Yup Sonny, you will love this die. The little samples are on their marry way to you, just like with the Peekaboo Frames, it’s so much better seeing it live and in full color.

  13. Lauri in Paperville

Brilliant!!! I am going to case this for my March Technique class…they will love it!!

    • Lauri in Paperville

oh and thank you for sharing and inspiring!

    • HI Brian! I just shared my version of your cards over on Stampin Connectiion and although I canot provide a link to your blog, I did give you credit so I hope folks can find you! I will also be posting to SCS and my blog in the next few days. thanks again! I love this!

  14. ooh yes Brian, what a great idea !! love it !!!!!!! tfs
hugs frenchie, hope every thing is well !

  15. Hi Brian. I notice you make a good amount of 4×4 cards. I normally avoid them because I don’t know if regular postage will do or if they cost extra to mail. Do you know how much it costs to mail 4x4cards?

    • Hi Anna, I really like the look of a square card. The four even sides are so pleasant to me. I normally go for the 5×5 or 3×3 and have even done 6×6, but this was my first 4×4. Here’s the deal with square cards, though: they are PERFECT for personal gifting, but the US mail won’t handle square cards – unless they are enveloped with a rectangular envelope (even better, a padded envelope for safe sending). I hope that answers your question.

      • Ahhhh…. I saw square cards and assumed 4×4. Thanks for validating that mailing square cards isn’t practical. Maybe I’ll have to try them for hand delivered gifts.

    • Anna, Another update! I was wrong about square cards. Apparently 3×3 cards are too small to be mailed but other square cards are not – it’s just that the post office charges an additional $.20 for square shapes. Sorry for the misinformation.

  16. Bravo, Brian! I’ve been “hoarding” this Natural Composition specialty papers and only used a couple…great idea! Now I need to make another list! Ordered my photopolymer stamps. Hugs, and have a wonderful day.

  17. Brian I love this card idea. Beautiful concept with the two layers and soooo versital. Ill be using this for weddings and all those masculine bday cards I’m making this year.

    Lynn.

  18. Great idea with the combo of framelits and die! TFS
And sooo excited to see the hydrangea back in the line-up!

  19. Beautiful, Brian. I love the Celtic feel to this card. Very cleverly put together.

  20. Interesting card. Very nice. Wondering how would you add on your sentiment? I purchased this die some time ago but have yet to use it. Mary Fish created a card using this die (the reason I purchased it) and it looked like stained glass. Beautiful! Check out Mary’s blog…you’ll love it and her. Through Mary’s blog is how I found my fabulous friend Brian! Keep the exquisite designs coming. Now, I better get crackin’ and use that die. 🙂

  21. Hi Brian:
Fabulous card (as usual)! I’m so excited that SU is going to photopolymer stamps. I have been using them for several years now. They are so easy to use and you can put one image inside another with absolutely perfect placement results. Also, they only need a bit of water or a wipe from a baby wipe to clean them and they look like new. AND, believe it or not, they store in even less room that present “clear” stamps that SU has. Hooray for SU!

  22. Some great engineering on this card Brian! Being a math person, I love the “geometry” of it all!

  23. This card is beyond brilliant!! Fantastic job Brian. I absolutely love this card and will be making a few this weekend. I think I’m going to try filling in the 4-point cut-outs instead. Thank you for such wonderful card ideas!!!

  24. Thanks Grace for the info …I usually lean toward my beloved Top Note for first grab but, between Lisa`s “GO-Look_See” on Mary`s blog and Brian showing his craftiness this morning I definitely can see where this could be a favorite also. Thank you ,Brian for pulling out some oldies every now and then …I think most of us have sort of planned to get them but, forgot so to speak … So on the list it goes and then there`s Sharon talking about that DSP and hoarding it …!!! Do I have to get it too ??? And it`s a lotta “brown” !!

  25. A.MAZ.ING!!! I wouldn’t have thought of pairing those ever! This is fantastic, Brian!

  26. Between your ornament and this awesome card I may just have to break down and buy the lattice

  27. Love this card and how unique and graceful too. I must be over thinking your directions with the dies. Video Please? Come on you know you want to make one:)

  28. Awesome project brian! You sure do find the shapes that work together! Also, loved the paint can. Been playing with coffee filters, hadn’t thought to use cupcake papers.

  29. And bibbity-bobbity-boo, you are brilliant Brian! Such a great find on these two things working so well together–great card! –Terri O

  30. Beautiful card, very clever idea and one that I’m going to try! I love that it is a non-event card, however, I just found out that I need a sympathy card and just may need to CAS this one. Thank you for your creativity and always sharing so much with us….you are a Master!
