Chalk Talk Sneak Peek

Thank you so much for all the positive feedback on my uber-simple cat card yesterday (you can see it here if you missed it).  I received a lot of wonderful emails and blog comments.  Bandit has been exhausted from all the phone calls from newspapers and reporters – maybe the last part is untrue, but Bandit was sleeping a lot yesterday afternoon.

Anyhow, I promised myself I wasn’t going to go ga-ga for all my new Stampin’ Up! sets until I had adequately utilized all my retiring sets.  That’s just too bad – some promises were meant to be broken, right?  My curious mind keeps saying, “What can you make with this?” and “Oooh!  Ooooh!  You haven’t broken in this stamp set yet!”  I can’t ignore my mind, so here’s another sneak peek of Chalk Talk:Chalk Talk, Stamipin' Up!, Brian King

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • Stamping a solid image.  When stamping with a stamp that has a large, solid surface, I find it very helpful to ink up the stamp (obvious) and then hold it on the paper for a while before lifting it up.  I don’t know if that’s really a legit technique or if it’s all in my head, but it seems like the ink has time to soak into the paper, giving me a better solid image.  Works for me, so maybe it’ll work for you, too.
  • Color pops.  I like almost any combination of colors from the 2012-2013 In Colors, but I particularly like Midnight Muse and Gumball Green.  Very masculine, very preppy.  While I added pops of Gumball Green by stamping the image in green and then snipping the appropriate pieces, I wanted to repeat the colors again.  Inspired by the below Paper Players card by Brenda H (OttawaMom), I added three strips of 3/8″ Stitched Satin Ribbon to accent the focal point of the card.  I added a strip of Summer Starfruit to add a third color to the card.
  • Utilizing the space on the card.  This tag is big.  It’s not big enough to take up the entire card front, and it’s not small enough to share the card with much else.  Something needed to be positioned at an angle to fully cover the card.  I decided to cover some of that space by running my ribbon at an angle and then positioning the tag straight and vertical.  A small and simple “happy birthday” completed the project.

  1. Lovely!! 🙂

  2. Love Chalk Talk! Can you add how you layered the Chalk Talk shaped layer of Gumball Green under the Midnight Muse? I assumed the snipping referred to the Gumball Banner that says “something” but maybe you just narrowed down the Midnight Muse layer.

    • It’s all snipping here, Patti. Although there is a framelit that coordinates with this set, it wasn’t party of preorder or any rewards, so a-snipping I did go. The framelits are on my first order. Yippee!

Very cool card Brian, I love Midnight Muse, it’s such a rich color. How clever of you to put the ribbon in an angle like that, it utilizes the empty space on the card perfectly. How’s Bandit this morning? It’s got to be exhausting to be so famous!!

  4. I just love your design and the way you used the ribbon is terrific! I can’t wait to get this stamp set. Hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

  5. I don’t think to angle products when in need of a space filler. I like your preppy discription of the card. Like it very much. Dare I ask, did you use the signo gel pen to outline? Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. With all the media attention yesterday, I bet Bandit is strutting around with his hollywood shades on! LOL Have a safe and fun holiday weekend.

    • Thanks, Lisa. No Signo Gel pen here. There’s a blue border around the stamp with a white strip between the center of the stamp and the blue border. I snipped it to leave a white border around the edges. Will be much easier when the framelits are available. 🙂 Bandit was very antsy today, but he’s old news at this point.

  6. This is a different card ! Not that yesterdays wasn`t . ….. I am not a chalkboard fan ….yes, I know that it`s hot right now …But, I like this card. Love the angled ribbon (how could you stand to use that much of that silky ribbon ….I love it but use it very little because I`m afraid I will end up with NONE ) The colors are nice and sorta Ralph Lauren . I have these colors but, haven`t used them together . My “Polo” loving grandson would love this card (minus ribbons ) for his birthday . Well, so far you have given me three card ideas for upcoming birthdays !! I`m glad I stopped by 😀

  7. Love the colors and the layout of the card. Thank you for sharing. Awesome

  8. I LOVE your card today, Brian! The way you angled the ribbon is just the right touch. Did you use Whisper White Craft Ink? Or did you use VersaMark and emboss it? Whichever you used, the effect is just right. 🙂

    • Oh, great question Suzie. Don’t think it is embossed but that is how I usually do white because I have trouble with WW Craft ink. Please tell us Brian!

    • Hey Suzie, This image is a negative image. I used Midnight Muse ink to stamp on Whisper White paper. No embossing or white craft ink – just a juicy blue ink pad with a negative image stamp. 🙂

  9. WOW! WOW! WOW! Definitely a WOW card today. Love it.

  10. Great cards Brian. I love the ribbon effect, especially the card with the diagonal ribbon. Awesome color combinations too. I just love this new stamp set and tag framelets.

Enjoy the long weekend (and extra time to stamp-woohoo)! Thanks for sharing.

  11. Great Color combo Brian, I just love the card. Reminded me of the days when IZOD was all the rage and the blue/green combo was hot at the country club! I also love having some white space on every card. The white space keeps the brain from being too distracted. LOL

  12. eye-catching and fun! I love the old-fashioned technique of just taking scissors to paper. (at first, I was thinking, “Oy good grief–I love that curvy banner die he used–is that really gonna be the way of things? For every stamp set I have to buy a coordinating die too????”) So I was happy to be reminded that snipping is still a tried and true method. (I forget that way too often.)

  13. I love the layout and the new set.

  14. Perfection to the max, Brian! I am definitely going to CASE this one, some day…when I get the framelits b/c arthritic hands don’t snip too well…LOL! But I love it so much I just have to do it! Have a great day and pet the Bandit for me. Hugs, my friend!

  15. Wow, what an awesome card! I haven’t broken out my Chalk Talk set yet, but you have inspired to! I too love the 2012-2014 In Colours and it was a lovely surprise to find out I inspired you with my use of the ribbon!! Thanks for sharing your card.

  16. GREAT card! Love the colors! I’ve had to scroll up and down several times because I also read all of the comments and learn from them too. Thank you so much for posting your cards on Pinterest. Have a great weekend.

TGIF….and enjoy the long Memorial Day weekend! Just read all of the comments and am coping out, yes again!, by agreeing with them all….can’t wait to get several bundles in the new catty! Great colors and design! Pats to Bandit….he surely must be tired! But what a very lucky cat to be in your home….!

  18. Love this – would never have guessed it was a negative image! Great to know because those “thick” white inks can be very tricky, not to mention messy, to use.
