Celebrate Your Birthday with The Paper Players

When I participate in sketch challenges, I love to play around with the shapes and stamps and colors until I find the combination that best matches the sketch.  The moment I saw this week’s sketch from The Paper Players, I knew exactly which set I would be using and how I would be using it.  I was ready!  Moments after seeing it, I had my card drawn out.  Shortly after, I made this card: Sketched Birthday, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

And here’s LeAnne Pugliese’s wonderful sketch that inspired my card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • Black and White and Pops of Color All Over.  This sketch really lends itself to a beautifully color blocked card – large blocks of color create a standout look.  In this case, I knew I wanted to feature a black and white card with just a few pops of color.  I chose basic, crayon box colors (red, blue, green and yellow) to accent the black and white backgrounds.  Applied to the parts of the images with Stampin’ Write Markers and then spread out with a Blender Pen, these provide the perfect accent for the balloons, party hats and banner.
  • Background Layers.  The larger pieces (top, right and bottom, left) are the central pieces of this card.  The smaller pieces are accents and backgrounds to these focal points.  I used MDS to create a 2″ x 2″ square and fill it a repetition of words, creating a typeset-looking DSP.  Yay, me!  I really like how they turned out.
  • Pop it Up!  I added a little dimension to the focal pieces by popping them up with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  This reinforces the focal points and further places the smaller layers in the background.  It also allows the banner, which hangs over the edge of the cake piece a bit to do just that (hang over the edge).

Stamp Sets:  Sketched Birthday  Inks:  Jet Black StazOn, Soft Slate, Crisp Cantaloupe (both used on to lightly color the cake), Stampin’ Write Markers (Pacific Point, Real Red, Gumball Green, Daffodil Delight)  Papers:  Basic Black, Whisper White  Accessories:  Stamping’ Dimensionals, Blender Pen
