Way to GO!

Do you remember when you went to take your first driver’s test?  Oh, the anxiety – “Did I remember to adjust the mirror?  Did I wait long enough at the stop sign?  What did the instructor just write down?  Is it good, is it bad?  Am I going to have to take this test again?”  Regardless of all the anxiety, passing sure is a great payoff!  It’s a rite of passage – especially in car-dependent Atlanta.

Pam’s son, Daniel, recently passed his test and now has a car.  How do you congratulate that wonderful rite of passage?  You acknowledge it with a greeting card, of course.  Here goes:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • See it for what it’s not.  The image used to make the stoplight is from Label Love, a new stamp set in the 2013-2014 Annual Catalog (that, by the way, is offered in a bundle with the coordinating punch).  By now, you know that I love to find different ways to use products – to use them in ways for which they weren’t designed.  You have to see things for what they aren’t to do that.
  • Line it Up.  My last “tip” was to see things for what they are not.  This one is similar – look at things from a different angle when you want to line things up.  For example, when I wanted to line up these traffic lights, I turned the Basic Black strip sideways to give me a different perspective.  It allowed me to see them in a different way so that my judgement about how the final image SHOULD look didn’t impair my ability to get it lined up properly. I do the same with small sentiments – position them corner-to-corner on the clear block – it forces me to really see whether it’s lined up – without being fooled by the edges of the clear block.line it up

  • Watch those colors!  I have lots of layers of card stock from the design of this card.  I tried different combinations but had to abandon plans at almost every pass.  Why?  The green and red combination kept looking like Christmas – definitely not what I was going for when I made this card for Daniel.  🙂

Stamp Sets: Label Love, Delightful Dozen  Inks: Jet Black StazOn  Papers: Gumball Green, Daffodil Delight, Basic Black, Real Red, Whisper White  Accessories:  Artisan Label punch, 3/4″ Circle punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals

Great, fabulous card!! It’s going into my “Fabulous Cards” folder for sure. My oldest granddaughter just turned 15!!! and I can’t even begin to imagine her having a drivers license but, when the time comes, here it is, the perfect card to celebrate that milestone. Daniel will have the thrill of having his drivers license and to top it all, a card by Brian King.

  6. Great one! 😉 Love it X

  7. This is a brilliant card!! So clever!

  10. Brian, you are so stinkin’ clever!

  11. What a super idea for a congrats on getting your driver’s license! That set/bundle was already on my wish list. And the stamp you used caught my eye right away. And your tips today are both perfect for me because I seem to struggle with lining things up regularly
I’ve even started using my SU! grid paper all the time, but still struggle 🙁

  12. I hate how great this card is. I actually feel the opposite of hate towards it.

  13. There you go again, reaching far beyond the galaxy to capture your over the moon creation. No I am not a Star Trek fan. That just popped into my mind. Back to todays feature presentation…. this is totally cool and amazing! Congratulations to Daniel !

  14. What a clever idea! I’m sure Daniel was thrilled, first for passing the test, second because he received this awesome card from a good friend. Talk about thinking outside the box…..you truly are amazing Brian!

  15. I love it!!! I think the ‘Dont give your mother a heart attack’ stamp would have been so much more appropriate though. I think it is a great suggestion for the next catty! Thank you Brian!

  16. So clever and cute! You are really good at looking outside of the box. I passed my test on the first try in a 1964 Dodge Dart convertible (with the top down) AND three on the tree! Such fond memories:-)

Symbolism! The green on the base represents moving forward ( getting his license), while the second layer of yellow reminds to do so with caution. What a great idea for a card, Brian.

  19. Excellent card, Brian! I know it’s been said before, but you are so darn creative! And I loved yesterday’s staycation card, too.

  43. Am I the only one wanting to know how you did the white behing the black? I want to make this for my granddaughter but need to know this part to finish it. Thanks and I love this card better than others I’ve seen. Please let me know asap.

    • Thanks for the comment and question. It was certainly a fun card to make. I stamped the image from Label Love with Basic Black ink on Whisper White cardstock and punched it out with the Artisan Label punch. The colorful circles on the inside were cut with a 3/4″ Circle punch (just a little bit smaller than the white circle in the middle). I hope that answers your question. If not, please let me know.
