PP150: Bling for Marshall’s birthday

Who says rhinestones are for girls? (I don’t know if anyone really says that, but if you know of someone who does, then please tell them they are wrong). Bling is for everyone.

My nephew, Marshall, turned nine years old last week.  The moment I saw the theme for this week’s Clean and Simple Challenge from The Paper Players, I knew I would enhance the beautiful, but sadly unlit, candles on this gorgeous Birthday Basics Designer Series Paper to create a special card for Marshall Here’s my clean and simple card I sent him:Label Something, Birthday Basics Designer Series Paper, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

And here’s the badge for the challenge:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Very Vanilla Background.  It seems that most birthday-themed papers and packages are designed with solid primary colors and a white background.  This paper, though, features soft versions of these primary colors and is accented with a Very Vanilla background.  That makes it perfect for either an “elegant and sophisticated birthday greeting” or a “cheery birthday celebration for a child.”  In this case, I made an elegant card for cheery child who’s celebrating a special birthday.
  • Accent the Right Colors.  The variety of colors in the patterns of this paper make it perfect for both masculine and feminine designs.  On this card, I added rhinestones to the blue and purple (Bermuda Bay and Wisteria Wonder) candles to focus attention on these colors for Marshall’s card.  Were I making a card for girl, I might have added the rhinestones to the pink and red candles to draw attention to those shades.
  • Simple Trimming for Lovely Layering.  After I stamped the Label Something image in Summer Starfruit, I closely trimmed the edges with my paper snips, allowing for a perfect layering when added to a punched piece of Bermuda Bay.  I also stamped the image in Bermuda Bay, trimmed the central oval and added it to the Summer Starfruit image. Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Stamp Sets: Label Something  Inks: Bermuda Bay, Summer Starfruit  Papers: Bermuda Bay, Summer Starfruit, Very Vanilla, Birthday Basics Designer Series Paper  Accessories: Artisan Label punch, Basic Jewel Rhinestones

Quick Update:  I didn’t want to START my entry with this update, but the power was finally restored at 12:30 am Saturday morning after going out Thursday night.  I appreciate all of your kind comments and emails of support.  It was hot and uncomfortable, and I lost everything in the refrigerator/freezer.  Other than that, I really don’t have anything to complain about.  We’re all safe (Bandit included) and sound.

  1. Label Love! Yes. Love this card, I hope the bling will go over well with Marshall however, …risky!

    • He loved it (at least that’s what he told me). 🙂 Just wanted to point out that this stamp set is Label Something, it’s a set that has different labels that coordinate with different punches. One of them happens to be the punch that goes so well with Label Love.

  2. I am so impressed with your trimming skills . That really adds so much to the greeting . That Birthday Basics dsp is a surprise paper. I have already made two cards (using my Shares samples ) with it and really like how they turned out . You have done this one up right with the “candle light” and using candleliht so to speak. !! Glad your power is on ! Check with your homeowners policy on covering your lost freezer and fridge items . Mine covered my lost food items one year . As I said they are predicting an active hurricane season !! Load the freezer up with ice packs and buy some of those hand held battery fans . I have been where you were too many times . Happy Sunday !!

    • Thanks, Sonny. I was in Charleston for Hurricane Hugo. Yikes! We were weeks without power. It was probably time for a refrigerator cleanout anyway. 🙂

  3. I am a “bling” person myself, Brian, so I most definitely appreciate the sparkle (I think that I have 6 packs of extra Rhinestones on hand at the moment, lol) !! I am slowly starting to like Summer Starfruit and was instantly in love with this dsp. The Label Love punch and stamp set were one of the first items (thank you for bundles) that I purchased during the pre-sale (I am a demo in Canada) and I cannot put them down. I love your card and I hope that Marshall does as well.

  4. This is beyond the word cute. Now, I know a boy doesn’t want to hear the word cute but WOW! (I teach 7 & 8 & 9 year olds- 2nd grade.) Thanks for pointing out the DSP. I will add that to my wish list. Happy Birthday to your Nephew! Blessings to you.

  5. Hey Brian! Love this card. You are “THE snip master”!! Your process regarding “accent the right color” …Genius!!!

  6. So glad to hear you have your power back. I think having us lose the power once in a while is a good thing – it makes us appreciate something we all just expect to be there all the time. I think sometimes we here in the States forget how easy we have it. You know the old saying “you don’t know what you’ve got until you lose it”. LOL

Brian – I hadn’t even noticed this birthday DSP and now I just know I absolutely HAVE to have some of it. My wish list is ALMOST equal to a workshop yet again. So much fun stuff, such beautiful stuff and as my favorite little Pooh bear would say – “paper and punches and colors, oh my!”.(sing it with me)!

  7. LOVE this card! Mind if I CASE it?? The card is just fabulous! TFS!

  8. This is beautiful. CAS elegant!

  9. I love DSP and I love how you showcase it – and expand upon it! Already casing this one……….

  12. Brian, absolutely wonderful B-day card! Happy Birthday, Marshall! It seems like it was only a few months ago you made one for him…egad, how time flies! Love the DSP and going to CASE it since I have my shares {LOVE THEM}! TFS, Brian!

  13. Wow what a great card. I kept wondering what to do with that DSP.

  14. I have a friend who has been creating cards with this DSP, and I am really drawn to it. You have created a fabulous card, for guys or gals of any age…soooo happy to hear that your nephew lived it…he is at an easier age, for another year or two….you rocked this card, again….and so happy to hear that you and your home survived the storm…food is easily replaceable….thanks for updating us and sharing this wonderful creation! And your fussy cutting…amazing!

  15. Yikes, not again….that your nephew loved it!

  16. I *love* Marshall’s card, too, Brian! The Birthday Basics DSP is really great, and the rhinestones are a perfect complement to the celebratory candles that flicker and sparkle at their tips. You picked the perfect colors for your mats and the artisan label to tie your design together.

Speaking of bling . . . in the office, I see more and more husband’s with diamonds in their wedding bands that *really* sparkle. I’ve asked quite a few gents if I could take a closer look at their gorgeous rings. So, it looks to me that it isn’t just the ladies who love bling!

  17. I love it that this fun dsp is the star of your show. And the supporting label is a perfect co-star. Love it!

Cheers to the power being on AND some bling! My order that UPS is scheduled to bring today will include this DSP & I am so excited to make some cards for the rest of my friends with summer birthdays! Thanks for the inspiration Brian!!

  19. Great way to highlight that DSP!

  20. Brian, this is fantastic! I, too, love the colors of this paper and your addition of rhinestones to “light” the candles is brilliant! Glad you’re no longer working by candlelight!

  21. What a fun way to add rhinestones to a boy’s card! Those candles are so fun….this paper is on my wish list for sure!!! You did a great job highlighting the BLING! So glad you have your power back….my BIL’s condo had MAJOR damage during Hugo!!!!

  22. I think you card is so clever! What a great way to add your bling! Awesome! 🙂

  23. I love this DSP and love your rhinestone lit candles! Awesome card, Brian!

  24. What a fun way to dress up that DSP Brian! The bling is perfectly placed and I’m glad to see that Marshall loved it. I think it is pretty cool, too! 🙂

  25. I am totally case-ing (not really a word, is it, lol?) this card for my niece and was wondering which stamp set the “Happy Birthday” comes from ? thank you

    • Apparently I should have looked more closely at your list of supplies. sorry about that. I looked too quickly and confused the background as Label Love, rather than Label Something.
