Too Many Candles

A couple of weeks ago, I shared a card I made with You’re My Hero, an adorable and new stamp set from the 2013-2014 Annual Catalog.  Unfortunately, it was Day 2 of the great Power Outage of Colt Drive, so my card was assembled by the light of a gas lantern, and the photograph relied solely on the flash of my phone.  If you missed it, you can see it here (just wanted to set you up for a very different take on the same image).

Anyhoo…do you ever want to make a beautiful, colorful birthday card that also includes a friendly nod to the fact that your friend is getting old?  We see “Too Many Candles, Not Enough Cake” as a sentiment in Bring on the Cake.  I love it!  Today’s card, thought, features my silly and (perhaps) humorous take on this sentiment and the same image as my in-the-dark card:You're My Hero, Birthday Candles, Petite Pairs, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Birthday Candles Jumbo Wheel.  There are a lot of people who enjoy working with Stampin’ Up!’s wheels.  I’ve not worked with them enough to be comfortable with them, so I peel the rubber image off the wheel and attach it to clear-mount cling foam.  Then it’s ready for my clear mount blocks.  I had to trim away a couple of the candles to get the images onto the largest block.
  • A Whole Lotta’ Snipping Goin’ On.  I think that snipping is quickly becoming my specialty.  I love the challenge of snipping around sharp corners or odd shapes.  Is there something wrong with me?  Here’s a closeup of my snipping on this fire truck:

  • Adding Texture to the Flames.  I stamped the line of candles in Pacific Point, Pumpkin Pie and Rich Razzleberry on Whisper White scrap paper.  I then stamped the same image in Daffodil Delight on this piece of paper to capture the image on the paper and the flames atop the candles.  Before I stamped the candles in Daffodil Delight, I lightly tapped the candle flames with a paper towel to remove a tad of the ink.  That gave me just enough flame for the addition of a little Pumpkin Pie.  Below, the first three candles have not yet been colored with Pumpkin Pie.  The combination of colors works well on this flame.Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Wrong??!! Nope, I see a whole lotta right!! 🙂 You are definitely the master snipper & blender extriodinair!!! Clever use of color & wit= a lethal combination!! And we can see the blender pens are part if your secret to success here… are the coveted SU paper snips as well?

  2. Love these candles! There are some gorgeous wheel stamps in the catalogs, I too would prefer to mount them on cling foam so I can stamp traditionally with a clear block. Love these candles!

  3. Hahaha!!! Love the fire truck/candle combination. Says so much without actually SAYING it.

  4. Hello Brian: This Wheel will be on my July order and I will do exactly as you did, I love this beautiful little candles, love the design on each of them. Your paper snipping is amazing, that truck looks fabulous. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Dang, you ARE a good snipper. The siren is amazing…….love to see the turquoise peeking through!

  9. I understand about the snipping. I feel so focused and peaceful as I am doing it–“just as happy as if I was in my right mind,” as my mom says! Yep, that’s me, all right! haha

  10. Very, very clever! I love the sense of humor in this card, and the colors, and the snipping, and the layout……..AND the designer! Great job once again Brian.

  11. I absolutely LOVE this card – colorful, humorous and definitely my style! The fire truck is (as the kids say here) “the bomb”! What a great card for my SIL who is turning 50 in July.

  12. Brian, love the card, thanks for the tip about the flame…I will use this…the fire engine makes me smile….

  13. So cute and perfect for those of us that would require more than safe numbers of candles !!
I like these candles but, as you I remove mine from the wheel . I have been known to use my acrylic plates for the Big Shot to use a extra long or large stamp . It works … I think this card needs to be submitted to Just Cards for Birthdays Magazine !! I love combining different stamp sets .
There is a peaceful “thing ” to snipping for some people . I can`t spell it but, look at the German art of Schriffnas whatever …the art of delicate scissor cutting !

  14. Oh…I want to welcome Maria back on board ! Glad you are back ! We missed you !

  15. I never even thought about taking the rubber off of the wheel to use……genius! A why didn’t I think of that moment! Love it!

  16. Great card! Love your idea of removing the rubber from wheel stamps and mounting on cling foam. I have some wheels, but never use them. I, too, am just not comfortable with them. I had been wondering what I could do with them. Thanks to you I can now make good use of them. You are a great inspiration.

  17. What a fun card Brian! You are officially the king of paper snipping, too. I can’t believe you cut that fire truck out so perfectly. I love your idea about removing the rubber from the SU wheels and using the images on the clear blocks. I have to try that out. I never seem to use my wheels, so maybe that would help. Have a great day! 🙂

  18. Love that! am turning 50 this year, so it applies!

  19. Everything about this card is super! Wishing both the fire truck and Happy Birthday set were available in Feb for my great nephew’s 4th birthday…..his dad is a firefighter and he loves fire trucks as well as…. This is perfect for a guy (or gal) of any age! You are so clever and your attention to detail is great (as it should be with any good numbers/finance guy!)…..TFS!

  20. Ah, I too have not mastered what seems to be the clumsy wheel thing. And, love your idea of just using it as a stamp mounted instead of the wheel! Sweet bday card with all the candles and fire truck…great job!
