Get Well Soon with a PPA164 Sketch Challenge

Touchdown!  I landed (well, the plane I was resting in landed) in Salt Lake City yesterday afternoon, and I am ready to begin [what I’m sure will be] one of the greatest weeks of my life.  Yippee!  I’ve got posts scheduled for this week already, but I’ll pop-in with updates, pictures and short tales every once in a while.  WIth upwards of 6,000 people attneding, it’s sure to be a blast.  Stay tuned!

I had a lot of fun with this week’s sketch challenge from The Pals Paper Arts. Margaret Moody gives us a wonderful sketch that can be used to make beautiful cards with lots and lots of different sentiments. Do you need a thank you card? This is the perfect sketch! Looking for a vintage-like feel for a wedding card? This is the perfect sketch! Just switch out the colors or textures, and you have a completely different card. I chose to stay very close to the sketch and to let the colors play their part:Delightful Dozen, Stampin' Up!, Brian King, PPA164

And here’s Margaret’s sketch that inspired this card:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • Perk Up! Are you making a card for someone who’s under the weather? The best way to instantly lift the spirits of a sick person is to vigorously tickle them under their ribcage. No! That’s not the right answer. In fact, that’s a TERRIBLE way to make someone feel better. The best way to lift their spirits is to give them a card with a selection of colors that ooze happiness. Melon Mambo and Pumpkin Pie are a perfect pair (orange and pink are very “chic” together), but add Coastal Cabana into the mix, and you’re hosting a get well party. How happy are these colors in combination with one another? You can’t help but smile.
  • Sketch. There are lots of different perspectives on sketch challenges – some see it as inspiration (a springboard to any layout their mind can create), and some see it as a guideline for exactly how their card should look. I’m somwhere in the middle. Although I added some additional cardstock layers behind the main panel and behind the sentiment, I mostly stayed very true to Margaret’s sketch. I really let the colors and the layout shine here, so I didn’t try to add anything extra.
  • White Space. I really like a good, clean look to a card. Some people call that simple, but I think it’s more than that. I see the white space on a card as an element of design. It should be respected and worked just like patterns and shapes. If you have too little white space, a card can feel crowded and overwhelming, and if you have too much white space, it can feel cold and vacant. Because this card has so much color and so many shapes, I think the excess of white space works well.

By the way, I used my Hexagon punch to crop the banners on all of these banners.  It’s easy to line up so you can get a perfect banner edge.  Woo hoo!

Stamp Sets: Delightful Dozen Inks: Melon Mambo Papers: Melon Mambo, Pumpkin Pie, Coastal Cabana, Whisper White  Accessories: 1-1/4″ Circle punch, 1-3/8″ Circle punch, Circles Collection framelits, Hexagon punch, Stampin’ Dimensionals

Be sure to check out the other cards at The Pals Paper Arts Challenge. I’d love to see your card there this week, too!
