Remembering Christmas

When I was first asked to present at Conference, Shannon offered to send me Remembering Christmas, a stamp set that’s in the 2013 Holiday Catalog.  At the time, we hadn’t seen the catalog.  When she described it to me (it’s a shadow of a deer head), I couldn’t even begin to imagine what I would do with the set, so I refused it.  WHAT!?  You know I like a challenge, right?  I retracted my refusal and then begged for her to PLEASE send it to me.  I decided I wanted to make something uber-masculine (but still pretty) and something masculine (but more pretty) with this deer silhouette.  Today’s card is the first of two cards I made with this set:Remembering Christmas, Woodgrain, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

I am really happy with how this card turned out.  Yes, it looks like the deer is mounted in someone’s living room, but it’s still artistic and beautiful, don’t you think?

Tips, Tricks and Reminders:

  • Faux wood.  The background panel (cropped with Labels Collection framelits) and the piece from which the deer is snipped are pulled from a piece of DSP backing.  I swiped several colors of ink across the backing to give the illusion of real wood – and it looks real in person.  Promise!  I showcased this technique at Convention (along with others) and made a video on it earlier this year.  You can see the video here.
  • Additional texture.  Sure, the outside piece and the deer look like they are made from real wood.  Still, though, the added Woodgrain stamp set on the Sahara Sand oval in the center of the card adds another dimension that adds to the illusion of wood.  This card appears to be really, really heavy, but it’s not.
  • How did I get that deer cut out?  There are two things going on here.  ONE:  I stamped the deer on another piece of board and then trimmed it.  When I finished the faux wood on a new piece of board, I traced the cutout deer and then cut it out again.  I know, I know.  It’s a lot of snipping – but this is for Convention.  I set out to make each one a “wow.”
