Happy Thanksgiving: a PPA165 Sketch Challenge

Fall is my favorite time of year – the air is crisp, the colors are vibrant and good food is abundant. This post has nothing to do with food – although I do want to give a big shoutout to cornbread dressing – oh, and ooey, gooey pecan pie. I smiled just thinking about it. Anyhow, Fall weather is still too far away to start getting excited, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start getting prepared. Complete with Autumn colors and textures, I’m sharing a beautiful card I made with Nicole Watt’s Pals Paper Arts Sketch Challenge:Magnificent Maple, Tags 4 You, Label Bracket punch, Stampin' Up!, Brian King

Here’s Nicole’s sketch that inspired my Thanksgiving project:

Tips, Tricks and Reminders

  • Staying True to the Sketch. I was daunted by this sketch at first. How ever would I build these panels and incorporate the circle? Step-by-step and easy does it – that’s how. I started with the circle and was excited to use my Magnificent Maple and Bracket punch (I received them in the mail on the day I designed and created this card). I was also excited to use more of my Sweater Weather Designer Series Paper. After I layered the two base panels, I was undecided about the additional layer on the right panel. A piece of card stock would be too solid, and a piece of Very Vanilla would be too plain here. After weighing the options, I decided to add a layer of Vellum Cardstock. I think it’s a nice layer here – keeps my design true to the sketch and allows the pieces of the sketch to work with one another.
  • Working with Vellum. Vellum can be tricky to secure to a card front. You can easily secure the vellum with brads or tuck it under layers. I added small, delicate dots of Multipurpose Liquid Glue on the top of the vellum and a larger amount on the left side that’s tucked under the circles. I made sure the glue (slightly visible through the vellum) would be camoflauged by the patterned paper behind it. When the right amount is used in the right places, you can’t even tell it’s there. Yippee!
  • A Few Finishing Touches. The sketch calls for a little texture on the base of the top layer on the right side panel. Rather than tear the vellum, I trimmed the base of the vellum with Finishing Touches Edgelits. I also sponged the edges of the vellum with Chocolate Chip ink and a Stampin’ Sponge to better highlight the edges of the vellum cardstock.

Stamp Sets: Magnificent Maple, Tags 4 U Inks: Chocolate Chip Papers: Chocolate Chip, Pumpkin Pie, Sweater Weather Designer Series Paper Accessories: Finishing Touches Edgelits, Circles Collection Framelits, Label Bracket punch

Ooooo more Sweater Weather DSP!!!! Great color combo and that lovely leaf really stands out!! Thank you for the tips and tricks with the Vellum… I have been intimidated by it in the past and just ordered some last week. Now I feel confident that I can play with it and make something that will be adhered the best way possible AND look balanced!!!

  5. Once again….Wow…wow…WOW!!!! I have a NEW name for you since you are SOOO amazing….BITB (Brian Is The Bomb!!!) Thanks for always making me smile!!!!

  6. I love Autumn also…my fave of the seasons …I love Houndstooth ….I love the name of this dsp series….. and what`s not to love about this card? I like Vellum but, don`t use it much so you have inspired me to pull it out . And now for the question ….are you going to do the Product Shares for the dsp from the new catalog ?

  7. I love the Fall too, also my favorite season, the colors are always spectacular!! You know I don’t particularly like DSP but this one is the exception. I think it’s really warm and delightful and with all the colors of this most beautiful season. I love the look of the Vellum, it adds such a soft detail to any project. It’s the perfect time to start thinking of our Holiday card making, thank you for the inspiration.

  8. I can smell the burning leaves! Beautiful for fall!

  9. Another nice fall card! Another nice snipping job on the maple leaf!. I like the layering of sentiment on leaf, too. I believe I just might do that. Thanks for the fall inspiration, B!

  10. Oh my gosh Brian – There is a box on the right bottom of my screen that says you have 1,260 followers! How wonderful! How amazing! Just like you and all your cards.

  11. Such a beautiful fall card!

  12. This card makes me want to curl up with a good book and a nice cup of hot chocolate! It’s awesome Brian. I love everything about it. Well done!

  13. Nice job! I would have never thought of using vellum, but I love it over the plaid! A friend alerted me to a special tape runner made just for vellum & it eliminated all of those “glue problems” you spoke of. The one I found is “Vellum Adhesive Runner by therm-o-web”; I located it at Michaels, but I’d think others must carry something like it.
BTW, Congrats on your acheivements & recognition at convention – looks like you “Rocked It”!

  14. Brian, I love your fall take on the sketch! That pattern paper is gorgeous and goes so well with the leaf. I also love how you can see the pattern paper through the vellum. I love fall too but I’m not quite ready for summer to end as it has been such a great one here in the Pacific Northwest. I have noticed the days are already getting shorter so fall isn’t too far away. TFS and have a great day

  15. Fabulous card Brian!!! I love Autumn!! I can’t wait for this Texas heat to leave!! Your card definitely should inspire the Fall to arrive early!! Beautiful card!!!

  16. Beautiful Brian. So warm and friendly just like the artist.

  17. Fall is such a nice time of year Brian and your card is perfect for helping us to be excited about its evetual arrival!

  18. Another fantastic card! Bling has it’s place but I do love the un-fussy cards most and this is one of my favorites. Love the DSP, the leaf, and the vellum touch. I do like vellum but I’m never too sure of how to use it. Thanks for showing us a simple but unique use Brian.

  19. Fall is my favorite time of the year as well and because of your wonderful cards, I ordered this fabulous DSP…should arrive today with other new goodies! I love using velum, but I usually color it from the reverse side for a soft effect….but this layer is wonderful all by itself! Your creativity is so inspirational….thank you! And again I was so excited to be at the right place and moment to meet you….very special start to Convention for me!

  20. Great card, Brian … I love that you used the vellum to soften the right panel. I used to use a lot of vellum … thanks for “bringing it back”. The Sweater Weather DSP really makes the leaf and sentiment pop.

  21. Fall has always been my all time favorite time of year. I love the crispness in the air, the chilly mornings, and the beautiful colors. You have captured all of those in this wonderful card.

  22. This is so pretty, Brian. PS. Congrats on Rising Star!!
